Removing factory badging/letters from bodywork

Three community-reported methods for removing factory badge letters (e.g. model-name lettering) from the bodywork: 1. Heat + peel: heat the letter with a hair dryer or heat gun while slowly peeling it off with a plastic scraper, then clean the residual adhesive with spirit (isopropyl-type solvent). 2. Thread pull: pull the letters off using thick nylon thread (drawn behind the letter, similar to removing old auto glass), then polish the area with a machine polisher and compound to remove adhesive residue. 3. Warm-weather timing: attempting removal during hot summer weather makes the adhesive softer and the letters easier to remove.

The factory adhesive is very strong in all cases; residual tape/glue must be heated and scraped clean, then wiped with spirit as a final step ^12345678.

Reinforcing report — string-pull method: an earlier report describes the same thread/string-pull technique (method 2 above) for the rear FAW badging specifically: stretch a string/thread under the letters to cut through the adhesive tape evenly, then clean off the remaining residue with solvent/rubbing alcohol. No special tools required ⁹¹⁰¹¹.
