Sill and hatch paint blistering — sandblast repair

Tags: #paint · #corrosion

Symptom: owners report paint blistering ("цветение") on the rear hatch and on the sills (порог), with rust underneath the trim. One owner took the cladding (накладка) off the door-edge area and found weld spatter and corrosion beneath it, which he blames on poor factory processing; a photo shows a grey sill with the trim strip removed, several blisters and two rust holes around the door-slot cut-outs ¹². His rear hatch also bubbled, and he repainted it after a dent ². Another owner had paint chips plus a number plate fitted wrongly so that it rubbed through the paint, and sent two sills and the hatch for painting ³⁴. DIY repair (sandblast and zinc): the first owner stripped the blistered paint by sandblasting with a compressor and a blasting gun (bought about two years earlier for another car), warning that a lot of abrasive still flies around ⁵⁶. He then applied a zinc coating (цинкование) on the bare spots as a temporary measure and planned to prime the next day ⁷⁸. The photo shows a sill after blasting, with the bare spots coated in pale grey zinc, not yet primed or painted ⁷.
