Lower sill protectors on the X80 can be removed for cleaning/inspection. Attachment: (1) clips along the sides of the sill — Mazda-compatible replacement clips are available on Ozon; (2) screws underneath the front and rear wheel-arch areas 12.
What to expect underneath: upon removal, expect accumulated dirt and point/spot rust (oxidation) on the sill surface hidden by the protector — one owner who removed theirs found noticeable grime plus spot corrosion starting. This indicates the sills should be periodically inspected and treated (rust conversion/protective coating) rather than assumed clean just because they're covered 345.
Recommendation: inspect sill protectors periodically for moisture accumulation underneath and clean/treat as needed, rather than leaving them installed indefinitely without a check.
Sill corrosion bubble — a common durability issue on 2019+ models (sand-scratch mechanism): especially on 2019+ model years, corrosion bubbles develop on the driver's door sill (lower door edge where the door meets the rocker panel). Root-cause mechanism: sand/debris gets trapped under the factory paint finish and scratches the coating; salt water and moisture then penetrate through those scratches, causing corrosion from the inside out. The corrosion bubble expands yearly if left untreated. A secondary location for the same failure mode: the trunk-lid corner near the rear fender (also observed on a 2019 model). Repair sequence: remove paint/corrosion down to bare metal, apply a zinc coating (hot-dip galvanizing is most effective), then acid-etch primer, acrylic primer, and topcoat 67891011.
Body panel corrosion under the rear-door sill trim (related report): corrosion also develops specifically under the trim/molding of the rear door sills (the bottom edge of rear doors), creating rust spots that become visible from outside once the molding is removed or lifts. This is a known issue affecting multiple vehicles — when examining a used X80, inspect under the molding, not just the visible painted surface 121314151617.
Factory sill protective film — inconsistent application (a manufacturing-quality gap): the factory-applied protective film on door sills (пороги), intended to prevent scratches and rust, was found to be present on most doors but missing specifically on the driver's-side door sill on some units — resulting in visible rust/discoloration (orange/brown spots) exactly where the film wasn't applied. Multiple owners independently reported the same driver-side-only gap, pointing to a manufacturing quality-control inconsistency rather than an isolated defect 1819.
