Trunk lid struts — part numbers and alternative

Some advice here concerns sub-zero winters and is less relevant in a hot climate.

Symptom: the trunk lid stays become weak or stop holding the lid open.

Replacement pneumatic (gas) struts, OEM: 5CA063620A (right side), 5CA062620A (left side) 12.

Alternative: Ford Mondeo struts sourced from AliExpress work, with one modification — the Mondeo struts are 2cm longer, so the upper mounting holes need to be swapped between the left and right sides during installation. The longer struts give better opening height and a more positive self-closing action than the originals 13. One owner who fitted AliExpress Mondeo struts reports the tailgate now lifts with a light touch and opens about 10 cm higher, and says the OE struts are weak, especially in winter 4.

Second alternative — Volkswagen Tiguan I (2007–2016 / 2007–2011) gas struts. Marshall-brand damper, part MGS2565, sold on OZON, is a direct compatible fit; installation is a simple spring-for-spring swap 56789101112131415161718. Compatibility confirmed by multiple owners with successful installation 141618.

Caution — Marshall durability. Victor reports the Marshall-brand struts are weaker than alternatives; other brands may last longer 14. This was confirmed by a real failure: a Marshall MGS2565 strut (VW Tiguan fit) seized/locked after only two months of use, requiring a temporary prop to hold the trunk lid open 1920.

VW Tiguan I gas struts — genuine VW part number, pricing, winter deflation pattern: cross-referencing the Marshall MGS2565 fitment already on this card, the underlying genuine Volkswagen part is 5N0827550A (VW Tiguan I, 2007–2016) — Marshall MGS2565 and similar aftermarket variants are cross-fit copies of this part. Typical cost: 500–1,100₽ per piece on Ozon. Community experience reinforces the durability caution above: these struts generally hold well, but can lose pressure/deflate during harsh winters (below −20°C) — in cold climates, plan on replacing them roughly annually rather than expecting multi-year service. Quality is variable across units/sellers: some fail within weeks (consistent with the Marshall seizure case already documented), others last around a year 2122232425262728293031.

Added sound-deadening weight overwhelms stock struts — Fenox A906024 and Marshal as stronger alternatives: applying sound-deadening material to the trunk/cargo lid adds enough weight that the OEM struts can no longer hold it open reliably — a common trigger for needing stronger replacement struts, distinct from the winter-cold-related weakening documented elsewhere on this card. Fenox A906024 was recommended as a more powerful replacement, but one owner who installed them reported disappointment: they lift initially but then "barely pull" and stop supporting the lid properly. That owner switched to Marshal-brand struts instead, describing them as lifting "more or less evenly" — a clear improvement over Fenox, though still not fully reliable in winter: even the Marshal struts only half-open the lid in freezing temperatures, requiring manual assistance to fully open it. A separate owner who installed a different (unspecified) stronger strut reported it holds the lid but doesn't lift it — "not bad for the price" was the verdict. General takeaway echoed here: all gas struts, including upgraded ones, underperform in cold weather — this reinforces rather than contradicts the -20°C degradation pattern already documented on this card 323334353637.

Conflict on sides: kitzap listings for the rear door (tailgate) gas struts give the opposite assignment — 5CA062620A for the right side and 5CA063620A for the left — while the comment above gives 5CA063620A for the right and 5CA062620A for the left. Check the side with the seller or against the old strut before ordering 382.

Tiguan listing numbers and Yeti caveat: an Ozon listing of Tiguan trunk struts bundles the numbers 5N0827550A, 5N0827550D, 5N0827550 and 5N0827550E as a possible cross-reference, but fit is not confirmed 39. A reply recommending 5N0827550A for the X80 trunk warns that Yeti and Tiguan struts differ in specification and advises reading reviews first 4041.
