Windshield frame edge — chip/rust protection and repair

Tags: #windshield · #corrosion

The windshield frame edge (especially the area above the windshield) is prone to chipping and rust. Two approaches, which can be combined:

Repair/touch-up (for existing rust or chips): (1) degrease the surface; (2) apply a rust converter with zinc; (3) apply an anti-corrosion primer; (4) paint with a matching color using a thin brush — small touch-up bottles with brush applicators are available, but an artist's fine brush works better than the bundled applicator for precision work ¹.

Preventive protective film/trim (to avoid future chips): a T-shaped protective trim/film for the windshield edge is available — one owner sourced it from AliExpress (T-shaped, applied ~3 years ago, still holding up well); a specific listing is also sold on Ozon.ru under "Защита от сколов, ржавчины для FAW Besturn X80 2018-" (chip/rust protection for FAW Besturn X80 2018+), priced around 3,000–5,000 RUB. Reported lifespan: 3+ years with good appearance retained. Installation requires a clean, dry surface and can be done DIY without removing the windshield. A third option mentioned is a general protective/"armor" film applied to the edge area ²³⁴⁵.
