Some advice here concerns sub-zero winters and is less relevant in a hot climate.

Overview

The X80's electronic parking brake (rear-axle) clamps the rear calipers with a motor/servo, not a cable. Before rear pad replacement the system normally needs to be released or put into a "service mode", otherwise the caliper stays clamped and error codes are likely.1 Community members report several different working procedures; these are not necessarily mutually exclusive — reliability varies by trim/generation and by report, so this card documents all of them together with the conflicts between reports.

Normal parking use and wear

Standard procedure: keep the transmission in D, apply the foot brake to stop, pull the electronic handbrake switch up to engage it, then release the foot brake and gas pedal.23 The owner's manual describes this exact sequence (including a "dynamic" very-low-speed parking case) and explicitly warns not to drive with the handbrake engaged.2

Holding the car stationary via P (mechanical parking pawl), D + foot brake (all four hydraulic cylinders engaged), or D + electric handbrake (the two rear cylinders engaged) all place broadly similar load on the drivetrain according to the manual — none of the three is inherently damaging when used on level ground.43

However, frequent use of the electric handbrake while merely parked increases wear on the rear brake pads and on the handbrake's motor/servo drive specifically — using P or the foot brake more often is gentler on these parts.56 Never engage the electric handbrake (or the mechanical/hydraulic brakes) while the car is in motion, except in a genuine emergency.7

Emergency-stop behavior at speed

Per the owner's manual, activating the electronic parking brake while driving at speed (the community discussed the case of ~60 km/h on a highway) triggers the ABS system and causes hard emergency deceleration. The manual documents this as an emergency-only function for when the normal (foot) brakes fail — not something to test casually, since it risks damaging the parking-brake motor/actuator (a costly part) if misused.8910 Normal (non-emergency) parking-brake engagement requires the car to already be stopped or moving at roughly ≤3–3.5 km/h.29 One owner also describes engaging it while rolling: pull the switch up and hold it, it beeps and engages after a long hold, and it releases when the throttle or brake is pressed while the stability system can intervene; he used it for controlled slides in snow. His explanation is loose, so check the exact sequence in the owner's manual.11

Reported procedures for releasing the handbrake to replace rear pads

No single procedure is confirmed as universally reliable across trims — different owners report different sequences working for them. Try them in roughly this order of accessibility:

  1. Button-hold + ignition-off sequence (most commonly reported, no tools needed): with the brake pedal pressed, press and hold the electric handbrake button down, then turn the ignition off while still holding the button/pedal — the caliper piston releases enough clamp force to begin the swap.121314 A reported variant: with the engine running and the transmission in N, press and hold the handbrake button for about 5 seconds, then shut off the ignition while still holding the button.15
  2. External 12 V supply directly to the caliper motor: disconnect the electrical connector near the caliper/handbrake actuator and apply a 12 V battery directly to the motor leads to drive it open; a couple of owners describe simple two-wire jumper setups for this, sometimes combined with pulling the handbrake fuse first — described by one owner as "the method for connoisseurs" (unconventional, but reportedly effective as a budget/no-dealer-tool option).16171819
  3. Scan-tool service mode: OBD tools such as Diagzon PRO put the brake system into a dedicated pad-replacement service mode alongside other functions (ABS/ESP diagnostics — one report found a faulty left rear ABS sensor this way — plus TPMS reprogramming); reported as more capable for FAW-specific functions than basic Bluetooth OBDII dongles.2021 Dealer/shop-level scan tools are also used by some services to enter and exit service mode cleanly.2223
  4. Bypass the electronics mechanically: one owner reports simply pulling the handbrake fuse and unplugging the connector, then doing the pad swap by hand without any electronic release step at all — contrasted by others with just entering service mode and replacing normally; both are reported as working, at the cost of extra fiddling for the fuse-pull route.242526

Conflict between reports: which single sequence "just works" is disputed. One owner found that pressing the handbrake button and turning off ignition alone did not fully release their (pre-restyle) caliper and had to add a direct 12 V feed to the motor to finish the job, while others report the button-only sequence working fine on its own — likely a generation/trim difference rather than user error.2728 Two different working procedures end up documented across these threads; if method (1) doesn't fully retract the piston, fall back to (2) or (3) rather than forcing it.29301731

Critical warning: never work with the engine running

Never remove a rear wheel/caliper to replace pads while the engine is running. The ECU can detect wheel rotation while a wheel is physically off the car and interpret it as the vehicle moving with a brake disassembled — this can lock the handbrake's electronic control module into a fault state (an expensive part to replace), not just throw a clearable error code. Always fully shut the engine down (ignition off) before removing the wheel/caliper.3233 The accepted safe methods are: a proper scan-tool service mode, or the button+ignition sequence above performed with the engine off. Some shops additionally cycle the brake pedal about 5 times after reassembly, before the next ignition-on, on the belief this reduces the chance of the re-clamp timer firing into an error.34

Piston retraction and the rear friction-plate debate

Releasing the electronic clamp (via any method above) only removes the resting clamp force — the rear caliper piston is a screw-in design (see the brake-caliper-repair-kits card for full mechanical detail) that must then be manually rotated in with a dedicated tool, not just pushed, to make room for new, thicker pads. A scan tool's "release" step is not a substitute for this manual screw-in step.3536373839

Conflict — installing pads without their anti-squeal friction plates: on one difficult rear-pad job, the friction plates supplied with the new pads would not allow enough clearance for the caliper to seat over them (the bracket has very little slack — roughly one-and-a-half pad-widths of total clearance). That owner installed the pads without the plates after retracting the piston via OBD scan-tool service mode plus manual rotation, and reported good, quiet, effective braking afterward with no issues after testing.4041424344 Another community member pushed back, arguing the plates are functionally necessary for proper braking/noise suppression and that the omission was risky pending more testing/mileage; a third view was that decent-quality pads shouldn't need the plates to avoid squealing regardless of whether they're fitted.454647484950

Diagnostics tooling

Beyond the pad-replacement service mode itself, scan tools like Diagzon PRO are reported to unlock a broader set of FAW-specific brake-adjacent functions in one package: ABS sensor/module diagnostics, ESP diagnostics, and tire-pressure-sensor reprogramming — worthwhile if buying a tool anyway rather than relying on a generic Bluetooth OBDII dongle.2021

Troubleshooting: handbrake button unresponsive after service work

If the electric handbrake button stops responding to presses after exiting service mode — and standard recalibration attempts plus disconnecting the 12 V ground both fail to fix it — pulling the 30 A fuse under the hood performs a full system reset. Reinstall the fuse once the handbrake responds normally again; this fixed the issue for one owner after all standard procedures failed.51

Frozen/stuck parking brake (winter thaw)

During a winter thaw, the electronic parking brake can appear stuck or slow to release because water has frozen between the pad and disc, typically during temperature swings around -5°C to +5°C. Reported fixes: warm the disc with a heat gun (fast and effective), or pour boiling water on the disc to melt the ice — one owner reports success with the latter using water carried in a thermos.5253 Opinions differ on prevention: some suggest pre-emptively drying the brakes in winter to avoid this; others argue the handbrake's servo motor is strong enough to break free of the ice regardless, making preventive drying unnecessary — treat as an unresolved community debate rather than settled advice.54

Facelift vs pre-facelift release without the engine running

A distinct, simpler release procedure is documented for releasing the EPB without the engine running: on facelift (2019+) models, press and hold the brake pedal, press the parking-brake button, and turn off the ignition while still holding the button. On manual-transmission cars, simply holding the button while shutting the car off is reported to work on its own. Do not release the button until the engine is fully off. The procedure is reported to differ on pre-facelift models, where the brake can be disabled more easily — treat this as a lighter-weight companion to the fuller numbered-procedure list above, for the specific "engine already off" starting condition.55565758 A member of a pre-restyle (дорест) car reports that the shorter variant (press the brake, release the parking brake, hold the brake, switch the engine off) does not work on pre-restyle cars; the owner's 31-second video shows it on a restyled automatic.5960

Parking-brake motor is not sold separately (reconfirmed)

Reconfirming and consolidating two independent reports: the parking-brake motor (моторчик ручника) cannot be purchased as a standalone part — it is only available as a complete assembly together with the rear caliper itself. If the motor fails, the whole caliper assembly must be replaced.61626364

EPB stuck/unresponsive after a battery replacement

After replacing the vehicle battery, the EPB can become stuck and fail to release. Reported partial fixes: holding the button longer, or pressing the brake pedal while pressing the EPB button simultaneously — these work for some vehicles but not all; some cars remain unresponsive even after these attempts, indicating a possible need for a dealer diagnostic scan.6566676869 (If the button itself becomes unresponsive after service work rather than after a battery swap, see the fuse-reset fix documented above.)

Reference video: rear pad replacement with the electronic handbrake

A community-shared YouTube walkthrough demonstrates the rear brake pad replacement procedure on the X80 with the electronic handbrake system, including the piston retraction technique and handling of resulting error codes: https://youtu.be/eM3lffCobnE?si=MKEJD_Griw2Jd7bk70

Reset procedure after brake service (if the EPB misbehaves post-service)

If the e-brake misbehaves after a rear pad replacement, a full reset procedure is reported: (1) disconnect the battery for 2–3 minutes; (2) reconnect it; (3) turn on the ignition; (4) press the brake pedal and pull the e-brake lever down; (5) hold the lever while turning the ignition off. A dealer performing this recalibration charged ~1,400 RUB (RU market, 2023 pricing). Best practice: disconnect the battery and release the e-brake before starting rear brake work in the first place, to avoid needing this recalibration step at all.7172

No-battery-disconnect rear pad replacement — reported working methods (with timing conflict)

Beyond the numbered release procedures above, owners report the rear pads can be replaced without disconnecting the battery, via any of several sequences: (1) shift to neutral, engine off, hold the brake, release the handbrake; (2) neutral, engine off, release the handbrake, then proceed; (3) some owners change pads with the engine running (reported as taking about 10 minutes) — this directly conflicts with the critical warning elsewhere in this card against ever working with the engine running, so treat engine-running removal as a risk some owners accept rather than a safe recommendation. Mechanical steps once released: remove the caliper with its bracket, leave the brake disc in place (held by friction only, no bolts needed for this step), screw the piston in, fit the new pads against the disc surface, and reassemble. A service-shop alternative: use a scan tool to electrically open/close the pads in service mode rather than doing it by hand.7374757677787980 Conflict: reported sequences disagree on whether the engine should be on or off, and on when exactly the handbrake should be released relative to the other steps — reliability likely depends on trim/generation as with the other release-procedure conflicts documented above.

Дело техники 820005 piston tool and no-motor-removal rear pad procedure (Aug 2024)

A specific branded tool for the rear caliper piston screw-in step: Дело техники, model 820005 (available on Ozon: https://ozon.ru/t/lYVkWqd), originally designed for Audi/VW/Skoda platforms but confirmed working on X80 rear calipers. The tool has 2 pins that insert into holes in the piston head, letting you screw the piston back into the cylinder rather than pushing it.818283 Full procedure reported using this tool, without removing any electric motor: (1) open the brake-fluid expansion tank before screwing the piston in (fluid gets pushed back as the piston retracts); (2) insert the tool's 2 pins into the piston head; (3) screw the piston fully into the cylinder; (4) fit the new pads; (5) reassemble. Reported as taking about 10 minutes per side, with no battery disconnection or motor connector work needed — consistent with, and an earlier instance of, the no-battery-disconnect method documented above.84838586

Restyled vs pre-restyled service-mode entry — early confirmation and error-code risk

An earlier report reinforces the facelift/pre-facelift service-mode distinction documented above: on restyled models, the car can be running in P or N — press and hold the handbrake button down while turning off the ignition with the other hand to release the caliper. On pre-restyled (doresto) models this sequence does not work the same way: as soon as the ignition is turned off, the handbrake automatically re-engages on its own, regardless of the button.8788 If the pads are serviced with the ignition left on at any point during the job (rather than fully off), this can store fault codes that only a dealer can clear via diagnostic software — reinforcing the critical "never work with the engine/ignition on" warning documented above.8990

Parking-brake control module (ECU) — part number and availability

The electric parking-brake control module itself (separate from the motor/servo already documented above as not sold standalone): part number 5CA044020A, priced around 70,000–75,000 RUB from official FAW dealers (RU market, Sept 2024). This module is extremely hard to find in the aftermarket — scrapyards rarely stock it, making used units nearly impossible to source. Reported common failure mode: in cold weather, the parking brake may fail to auto-release, requiring manual intervention.9192

Retracting the rear piston without removing the motor — internal adjustment bolt (Aug 2024)

An independent report of the full rear-pad procedure with the electronic handbrake, sourced from an Avito-purchased pad set: (1) engine running, shift to Neutral; (2) press and hold the handbrake button, then turn off the ignition while still holding the button; (3) disconnect the battery terminals; (4) remove the old pads; (5) retract the caliper piston using the caliper's internal adjustment bolt (hex socket) — this achieves the same result as the dedicated screw-in tool above, without removing the motor; alternatively, a strut/clamp can mechanically compress the cylinder, also without motor removal; (6) reinstall the new pads and adjust the caliper; (7) reconnect the battery; (8) turn on the ignition and press the handbrake to trigger auto-adjustment; (9) bleed the brakes before driving. As with the critical warning elsewhere in this card: do not change the ignition state mid-service, or fault codes will be stored that only a dealer can clear via software.939495

Dealership misdiagnosis: "clinched" caliper claimed to need replacement

A cautionary field report: an owner (Anna) took the car to a Bosch dealership to replace rear pads. The shop claimed the rear caliper on one side was "clinched" (заклинило) and needed a full caliper replacement. However, the car had driven 35 km to the shop without issue, and the brake discs showed only normal wear marks — not the damage pattern expected from a genuinely locked caliper.96979899100 Community consensus was that the dealership either mishandled the EPB service-mode/piston-release procedure (see above) or was upselling unnecessary work — a real caliper seizure severe enough to need replacement should have prevented the car from driving normally beforehand. Recommended response: get a second opinion at a different shop, and make sure any shop follows the proper release/retraction procedure (screw-in, not push; correct service-mode entry) before concluding the caliper itself is faulty.101102103104

Uneven parking-brake cable length after rear pad/disc replacement (Aug 2026)

One owner replaced rear discs and pads, screwed the caliper pistons back in, and reassembled everything, but found the parking-brake cable had become about 1 cm longer on each side afterward, so the EPB no longer applies in its emergency/mechanical-backup mode even though the caliper lever sits at the correct zero position.105 Community responses: (1) always release the parking brake before lifting the car / removing the wheels — most owners are asked to do this by the shop lift operator as a matter of course, and skipping it is a likely root cause of length drift; several owners who service rear pads regularly report never having to disconnect/pre-release the parking brake at all, suggesting the release step is normally unnecessary if the cable geometry is otherwise undisturbed.106107108109 (2) One owner speculated the issue could stem from leaving the ignition on during the job (the caliper re-clamping mid-service) and asked whether disconnecting the battery terminal is the fix — this remains an open, unresolved question in the thread rather than a confirmed cause.110 Conflict/gap: no owner in this thread confirmed a working fix for the already-lengthened cable; general good practice (per the rest of this card) is to keep the ignition fully off throughout the job and use a proper service-mode/piston-retraction procedure rather than freehand reassembly.105106107108110109

More release methods and dealer delay (2025)

Besides the button-hold sequence, two further ways are reported for retracting the EPB to change rear pads: release the EPB with the engine running, disconnect the battery negative, then switch off; or have a mechanic connect the EPB motor's two leads to a 12 V source with crocodile clips, reversing the polarity to retract and then re-extend the piston. One owner reports that a dealer's diagnostic procedure took a long time before it worked. The methods differ and none is confirmed as universal; see the numbered list above.11111211315 The service-mode and piston-tool procedures are also covered in rear pad replacement with EPB; wiring, fuses and diagnostic codes are in ABS and EPB: circuits and DTC codes.
