Replacement battery quality and lifespan

Tags: #battery · #buying-guide

Low-cost generic replacement car batteries fail rapidly — one owner reports a lifespan of only about 6 months before failure (media 18975 shows the failed unit) ¹. Investment in a quality brand battery is recommended despite the higher upfront cost.

Battery disconnection/reconnection — what actually resets (February 2026): Removing the battery to recharge it does not cause major electronics problems on the X80. The main side effects reported: the clock/time resets, and the window auto-up (one-touch) function needs to be re-learned/re-programmed ²³⁴. Multiple owners confirm they've disconnected the battery repeatedly — including during winter cold-soak voltage drops and during shop repairs — with no lasting issues: one owner had the battery removed "very many times" during a repair with nothing lost ⁵⁶⁷. One extreme data point: a car sat without its battery installed for about a month with no resulting problems once reconnected ⁸. Only the clock and radio/EQ settings need re-entry afterward — described by owners as "nothing critical" ⁹⁶. Caution — this does not generalize to all cars: one owner cites a colleague's BMW X3 as a contrasting case, where disconnecting the battery carries roughly a 50/50 risk of triggering a major electronics fault requiring 50,000+ RUB to fix — underscoring that the X80's tolerance for battery disconnection is a specific, reassuring trait rather than something to assume applies to every vehicle ¹⁰.
