Engine oil brand experience and change practice

Tags: #engine-oil

No abnormal oil-consumption tendency is reported on well-maintained X80 engines under normal conditions. Oil brands tested by community members: Лукойл (Lukoil) Genesis — no complaints ¹²; Газпромнефть (Gazpromneft) 5W-40 — poor marks, noted for consumption ³; ZIC 5W-40 — noticeable consumption and engine noise reported ⁴; Eneos — acceptable ⁵⁶. Fresh oil can be hard to read on the dipstick; thermal expansion is normal (warm vs. cold readings differ, but not dramatically) ⁷⁸.

Separately, one owner who has worked with used/imported contract engines (Japanese, German, and UK-sourced, 50,000–160,000 km) observed: Japanese-sourced engines are cleaner internally despite higher mileage; German-sourced engines are dirtier at lower mileage; UK-sourced engines fall in between (media 30712 shows a Japanese ex-Renault contract engine at 157,000 km). European service intervals (20,000–30,000 km) mean less frequent oil-change maintenance there, while Eastern European/Autobahn-heavy usage accumulates mileage comparable to aggressive urban driving. Overall observation: frequent small-volume oil changes (every 5,000 km) with a quality synthetic oil produce visibly cleaner engines than infrequent large-volume changes ^91011121314.
