A/C condensate drainage

Tags: #hvac · #water-ingress

Dripping under the car is normal. Water dripping from underneath the vehicle while/after A/C use is expected condensate from the A/C evaporator, not a leak to worry about.12 Whether it drips depends on ambient conditions (humidity/temperature) — it won't drip every time.2

Short drain tube routes condensate onto the steering rack / passenger floor. The A/C condensate drain tube on the engine side is short and can drip water directly onto the steering rack and toward the passenger footwell area, rather than clear of the car. This is a common, independently confirmed issue.345 Fix: extend or reroute the drain tube so condensate is directed clear of the steering components and cabin — a fellow owner noted that dripping is fine as long as it stays outside the cabin, but should not be allowed to migrate to the interior side ("не нутра").5 Note: a separate tube in the same area belongs to the steering-rack circuit, not the A/C drain — don't confuse the two when tracing hoses.6

Water pooling under carpet = blocked drain, not normal operation. When drainage is blocked instead of dripping outward, water pools inside the cabin under the carpet/floor mats. Tell-tale sign: a stale-water smell from the A/C vents even when the A/C has been off/dormant for a while.7 Diagnosis: if the drain tube isn't dripping at all after previously dripping normally, suspect a clog.1 Fix: disconnect the A/C drain hose and clean it with A/C-system foam cleaner (aerosol spray) or compressed air; also clear the condensate collection pan of debris; inspect the full drain-tube routing for kinks or blockages.89 Preventive maintenance: periodic use of A/C foam cleaner to keep the drain path clear.10

Distinguishing from sunroof/cowl drainage. Water intrusion into the cabin is not always the A/C drain — check the sunroof drains (both sides) and the cowl (жабо) drainage holes as separate possible sources before assuming it's the A/C system; these are independent drain paths that can also clog or leak.1112

Sunroof drain leaks — seal lubrication fix. A separate, confirmed sunroof-specific issue: the sunroof starts leaking water as the weather warms up. Fix: lubricate the sunroof seals with silicone grease. Many units begin leaking after their first heavy use, so periodic seal lubrication/maintenance is worthwhile preventive care, not just a one-time fix.1314

Drain-clog diagnosis when condensate floods the passenger footwell. A second, independently reported case of the same blocked-drain pattern described above: when A/C condensate floods under the passenger-side carpet instead of dripping outward, the two leading suspects are (1) a clogged drain tube where it exits toward the engine bay — the most common cause — or (2) a missing or kinked rubber extension hose on the drain outlet (it should have an angled/bent hose fitted). Diagnostic order: check the drain tube in the engine compartment for blockage first; if it's clear, inspect the outlet-hose routing and the seal at the evaporator junction next. In stubborn cases, full disassembly may be needed to trace the exact leak source.151617181920

Corroborating report — short drain hose causes cabin flooding, fix by extending it. A separately reported case (different Telegram group) confirms the short-drain-hose problem documented above: water pooling under the driver/passenger floor mats, especially on the passenger side, traced to a factory A/C drain hose that is too short and drips inside the cabin instead of outside. Fix: extend the black drain hose located at the A/C unit with additional tubing so it reaches clear of the vehicle body — consistent with the reroute/extend fix already documented on this card.212223242526272829303132333435

Corroborating report — sunroof drain as a separate, easily confused water source. A second confirmation of the sunroof-vs-A/C-drain distinction already noted above: water under the floor mats can also originate from the sunroof/moonroof drainage system rather than the A/C. Check the white drain tubes under the front panel where they connect to fittings on the engine shield (visible after removing the lower panel) — these tubes can disconnect or clog independently of the A/C drain; reconnect or clean as needed.21223637
