Coolant system — capacity and air-bleeding

Total capacity and drain behavior. FAW X80 coolant system total capacity is 7.5–7.7 liters (owner's manual specifies 7.5 L with G30-91 extended-service coolant, year-round use; a separately confirmed manual page gives 7.6 ± 0.5 L with the same G30-91 spec, applicable to model codes CA6462MTE5AG1 and CA6462ATE5AG1).1234567 Draining through the radiator cap filler opening only removes about 5–6 liters; roughly 1.5–2.5 liters remain trapped in the engine block and lower passages. To drain fully: locate and open the lower block drain plug, or use the lower radiator hose as a bypass drain point — some residual coolant is still difficult to access even then. Tilting/elevating the front end improves drainage completeness. A manual drain requires removing the radiator cap and thorough flushing.12
Normal coolant level. Level should sit at the 50% mark on the expansion tank when the engine is cold; when hot, it rises roughly 1 cm higher — this is normal thermal expansion, not a leak.8
Air-bleeding methods after any coolant work. Two field-tested approaches: (1) Incline method — find roughly a 60° slope, point the front of the car uphill, start the engine and rev to ~3,000 RPM until the cooling fan engages (about 20 minutes), then top up with ~250 ml coolant and drive. (2) Top bleed method — let the engine cool completely, remove the upper hose from the throttle-body/manifold connection (the system's highest point), loosen the radiator cap slightly, pour coolant in slowly until it flows out of the opened hose, then reconnect and seal. Community experience: most air-pocket complaints trace back to a defective radiator cap — in the majority of reported cases, replacing the cap resolved the issue rather than the bleeding procedure itself.9 A simpler variant reported independently: after refilling coolant or replacing the thermostat, simply tilt/raise the front of the car and listen for circulation sounds until air pockets stop escaping — corroborates the incline method above as a routine, low-effort finishing step after any coolant work.101112
Post-thermostat-work checklist if temperature doesn't stabilize. After a thermostat replacement, the system may still hold trapped air. Monitor whether temperature stabilizes normally during a drive. If the gauge fluctuates or never reaches normal operating temperature: (1) check coolant level in the expansion tank, (2) check the radiator cap seal — a cap that isn't fully sealing (non-hermetic) is a common contributor, consistent with the radiator-cap finding above, (3) bleed remaining air by driving until circulation stabilizes. If temperature instead overshoots (runs hotter than normal), suspect the thermostat itself is faulty rather than just an air pocket.131415161718
Loss of circulation after cylinder head work. If coolant circulation is lost or reduced after cylinder head removal/repair, the leading suspects are: (1) a new water pump seal that has failed, (2) blocked passages in the cylinder head from improper reassembly, (3) an incorrect/incompatible head gasket, or (4) debris left in the cooling channels during the job. Targeted diagnosis (pressure test, passage inspection) is needed to pinpoint which of these applies before further work.19
Sudden idle/traffic overheating (120°C spike) — air-pocket-first diagnosis. A separate, detailed field report: engine temperature suddenly spiked to 120°C at idle or in slow traffic after an otherwise normal short drive.20 Priority order of suspects: (1) an air pocket (пробка) in the cooling system — the most common cause, especially after any antifreeze drain/refill; (2) thermostat failure (stuck closed); (3) the cooling fan not engaging properly.2122 Diagnostic routine: monitor fan engagement temperature (should start ~98–99°C, cool the engine to ~92°C, then cycle off), and check whether the lower radiator hose gets hot (confirms the thermostat is opening).23 In this case the owner resolved it by topping off antifreeze (~200 ml) and elevating the front of the car on a ramp while revving, then monitoring fan cycling over an extended highway drive — after which the car ran without recurrence for 40+ minutes of idle without climbing back near 100°C.2425 Preventive takeaway: always check coolant level after any cooling-system work, and monitor over ~500 km after such a fix to confirm the thermostat is behaving normally.26
Overheats while driving with a cold lower hose — air-pocket, not necessarily thermostat. A distinct but related symptom pattern: temperature is normal at idle, then the engine overheats specifically while driving, while the lower radiator hose stays cold despite the thermostat opening and the fan running. Root cause here was an air pocket in the cooling system rather than a failed thermostat. Remedy: bleed the air out following thermostat/coolant work (see air-bleeding methods above); if bleeding alone resolves the overheating, no thermostat replacement is needed — don't jump straight to a parts swap.272829303132
Proper coolant-level checking procedure — radiator first, expansion tank second. On a cold engine: (1) open the radiator cap on the radiator itself — coolant should be visible at the bottom of the filler neck; (2) if no coolant is visible, add until the level appears; (3) only after the radiator itself is confirmed full should you adjust the expansion-tank level to its center mark. Check the radiator level first, not the expansion tank, because the expansion-tank cap can malfunction and give a misleading level reading. If the coolant is old and hasn't been changed recently, drain completely and refill rather than topping off — and remember to bleed air from the system afterward (see the air-bleeding methods above).3334
Air-bleeding confirmation specifically after a thermostat swap. A field-tested confirmation of the air-bleeding methods already documented above, applied specifically after thermostat replacement: bleed air by either (1) starting the engine at high throttle and letting it cycle, or (2) on a lift — raise the front of the vehicle, start the engine, apply throttle, then release. Confirmation the bleed worked: the heater should blow hot air immediately afterward. If it doesn't, air remains trapped in the system — treat lack of heater output as the diagnostic signal that bleeding isn't complete yet, rather than assuming a thermostat or heater-core fault.3536373839
