The X80's climate control uses several plastic-geared blend/direction doors (dampers) to mix hot/cold air and route it to face/feet/defrost vents, driven by small actuators/servos. Multiple independent failure modes have been reported in this mechanism family — documented together here since they share the same subsystem and symptoms often overlap in owner reports.

Door seal failure — inconsistent air distribution. The rubber seals on the blend/direction dampers themselves can fail (fall off/degrade), causing inconsistent air distribution: e.g. blowing hot air to the face when the control is set to feet, or vice versa. Fixing this requires extensive disassembly of the HVAC unit to access the dampers — described as a genuinely difficult job ("страх вообще" — a real pain).¹²

Blend-door actuator gear wear (general climate-noise complaint). Separately, the blend-door actuator itself contains plastic gears that wear down over time. Symptoms: a characteristic clicking/grinding noise when adjusting temperature controls, and an audible hum while the climate system runs, worse in hot weather and correlated with fan speed. This wear is considered normal but progresses faster on some cars than others; proactive replacement may be worth considering on high-mileage vehicles once noise appears.³⁴

Recirculation-damper servo failure — clicking/crackling + uneven vents. A distinct, specific failure: the recirculation-damper servo motor (сервопривод заслонки рециркуляции) itself dies, producing a clicking/crackling noise from the dashboard ducts and inconsistent airflow (some vents blow, others don't).⁵⁶⁷ Diagnosis: listen for grinding from the servo motor and manually check whether air direction responds correctly to the control setting. Fix is to replace the servo unit — reported part identification is Mazda-sourced GS1D61A60, possibly interchangeable with the X80's part; a used unit was sourced from a junkyard (Euroavto) for about 300 RUB (2025-07, RU market).⁸⁹

Blend door stuck open — warm air to the driver's footwell despite A/C. A separate blend-door failure mode: warm air keeps blowing into the driver's footwell even with A/C set cold and the fan running, and the problem worsens at higher engine RPM. Root cause: the heater blend-door actuator fails, or its seal degrades, so the door can't fully close and hot coolant-heated air bypasses the cold side. Diagnostic option: an official-dealer diagnostic tool can read a specific DAG error code for the blend door. Full fix requires removing the dashboard to access the blend-door assembly — a time-consuming repair; some owners tolerate the issue or simply run the A/C off as a workaround rather than commit to the job.^{10111213141516171819}

Heater-damper servo failure — creaking/clicking, separate from the recirculation servo. A related but distinct servo failure: the servo motor driving the heater's air-direction damper wears out internally (stripped gears, corroded central axis), producing a creaking/clicking noise specifically when recirculation disengages, most audible in cold weather. Fix: replace the servo motor. Access is reported as possible via the glove box without removing the center console — a notably easier access path than the full-disassembly jobs described above for other damper types.^2021222324

Heater-damper servo failure — crunching noise on startup. A separate report of the same servo family: a crunching/grinding sound from the glove-box area immediately on engine startup, again traced to the heater damper servo actuator. The failure can be either mechanical (worn/stripped internal gears) or electrical (actuator control fault), and both present with the same audible symptom.²⁵²⁶
