HVAC controls — recirculation and mirror heating
Tags: #hvac
Some advice here concerns sub-zero winters and is less relevant in a hot climate.
Recirculation activates unintentionally when the windshield washer is used. Some X80 units automatically activate recirculation (рециркуляция) whenever the windshield washer is triggered — an unwanted side effect that can fog the windows in winter, since outside air is cut off right when washer fluid/moisture is added to the equation. This behavior persists until either the recirculation setting is manually disabled again or a few minutes pass on its own. Root cause: a solenoid valve that controls the recirculation flapper is wired to activate alongside the washer function (likely by factory design intent for debris/spray protection, but a real nuisance in winter fogging conditions).12345678
Workaround 1 — disconnect the solenoid entirely. Disconnect the electrical connector from the recirculation solenoid, located under the dashboard near the glove box. This permanently disables the auto-recirculation-on-washer behavior, but also removes recirculation control tied to that solenoid entirely — a blunt fix.12345678
Workaround 2 (preferred) — add a manual on/off switch. Install a simple manual switch in the power wire feeding the recirculation solenoid: (1) locate the solenoid under the dashboard on the driver side, above the glove-box area, (2) cut/break the power wire to the solenoid, (3) crimp in a switch connector, (4) mount the switch in the dash, reusing a factory blank cutout if one is available nearby. This preserves full manual control — toggle the switch off when you want guaranteed outside air (e.g. right before using the washer in cold weather), toggle it on when you actually want recirculation — rather than losing the feature entirely as in workaround 1.34
Mirror heating is tied to rear-window defrost — single shared button. Side-mirror heating is integrated with the rear-window defrost function and controlled by a single button (typically on the climate-control panel) rather than having separate controls. When activated, both the mirrors and the rear window heat to a moderate, comfortable temperature — not the aggressive/hot output seen on some other vehicles' defrost systems. Heating is reported to work efficiently even starting from a fully cold/frozen state.91011121314151617
Controlling hot/cold air surprise on the next startup — set climate mode before shutting off. Hot air from the vents when the climate/A/C is switched off is normal while the vehicle is moving, caused by ram air passing through the heat exchanger and routed by the automatic dampers — not a malfunction. To avoid an unpleasant hot-or-cold-air surprise on the next drive: before turning off the engine, set the climate control to cold mode for a few seconds (preferably while still driving), then switch off. Symmetrically, if you want warm air ready on the next startup, set climate to warm mode just before shutting off — the next drive will start with that setting already in effect, without needing to reactivate the heater manually.181920
Window fogging in rain — distinguishing normal condensation from a fresh coolant leak. Interior window fogging during rain with the A/C running can be either normal condensation or a sign of a fresh coolant leak into the cabin — the two look similar at first. Diagnostic checklist: (1) verify the A/C is actually working (check for the expected puddle/drip under the car — see the condensate-drainage card); (2) measure the coolant level; (3) check for wet carpets under the driver/passenger feet (a coolant-leak tell, distinct from A/C condensate — cross-reference the heater-core-leak card if wet carpet is found). If it's fogging with no leak evidence, the fix is simply to run max heat to the windshield with max blower for 5–7 minutes to clear it.2122
Window-fogging prevention — run A/C year-round, or use fresh-air mode. A general preventive habit, distinct from the reactive fix above: to prevent window fogging in humid/cold conditions in the first place, keep the air conditioning running continuously throughout the year — A/C actively dries cabin air, which is why it helps even in cold weather when cooling isn't the goal. Alternative/complementary habit: use external (fresh-air) circulation mode rather than recirculation mode, since recirculation traps cabin humidity that contributes to fogging (see the unintended-recirculation issue elsewhere on this card, which can work against this advice if it triggers unexpectedly).2324
