Thermostat replacement and cooling-system bleeding
Tags: #thermostat · #price
Symptoms of a failing thermostat: car doesn't warm up (temperature gauge stays near 2 divisions from zero), and it cools further at speed — a sign the thermostat is stuck open.12
Quick diagnostic test. While the cooling fan is activating, place a hand on the lower radiator hose. If the hose is cold, the thermostat has failed (the large cooling circuit isn't opening as it should). Normal operation means the hose feels warm.3
Access — two approaches: 1. Lateral access from the side, near the power steering — faster, but requires careful hand access and fitment.124 2. Removal of the intake manifold — takes longer but gives much better working space and allows gasket replacement at the same time.4
Refill and bleeding procedure. After replacement, fill the cooling system through the radiator cap opening until the level reaches the bottom of the filler neck, then top up the expansion tank. Start the engine and let it reach normal operating temperature; increasing engine RPM or tilting the car (front end up) helps expel trapped air pockets.456
Multiple community-reported bleeding methods: 1. Disconnect the coolant tube ("трубка") from the throttle body briefly with the engine running, to let trapped hot air escape.78 2. Tilt the vehicle with the front elevated ~20° (e.g. on a lift) and briefly rev the throttle.91011 3. Stop on an uphill slope and accelerate.11 4. Install a Mayevsky-type air-bleed valve on the upper radiator hose (not a factory part — an aftermarket addition).12 5. Idle on a flat surface with the radiator cap partially open (first-click position) for 7+ minutes.1314
Locating the drain point. Every manufacturer has a location where coolant can be fully drained via a hose/opening — on the X80, this is discussed but community members report needing to identify the specific hose/point themselves; ask in the group if unclear.56
Success rates vary — one owner reported it took over 4 hours to fully bleed air after a new thermostat install, while another succeeded via the intake-manifold-removal approach in a reasonable time. If bleeding is taking excessively long, check that the radiator cap is properly seated/sealed, since a bad seal prevents the system from pressurizing correctly and slows air expulsion.1516
General recommendation — monitor temperature, consider an aftermarket thermostat (2026-03 note). Beyond reactive replacement when a thermostat fails, the community reminds owners to keep an eye on engine temperature generally and consider proactively replacing the factory thermostat with a more reliable aftermarket unit to help prevent overheating issues.17
Two coolant filler caps — correct fill point and hot-cap warning (2026-04 report). The X80 cooling system has two access points: a yellow cap on the coolant expansion tank, and an orange cap directly on the radiator. For routine top-up, use the yellow expansion-tank cap — fill to the MAX line, or to about the tank's halfway mark when the engine is cold; this cap can safely be opened even when the engine is warm. The orange radiator cap should only be opened when the engine is cold, and is meant for a full coolant replacement or when coolant is critically low and the heater has stopped working. Never open the radiator cap while hot — the system is pressurized and opening it can cause burns. To find the MIN/MAX marks, look at the side of the tank facing the engine.181920212223
Coolant system flush cost, service-manual interval, and a degraded-coolant example (2025-12 report). The service manual specifies a coolant flush/replacement interval of 100,000 km or 10 years, whichever comes first. Full flush cost is proportional to labor and parts required — one reported job involved flushing a heavily contaminated system where degraded coolant (resembling a Tosol/water mix) had caked deposits onto the radiators, at 91,000 km of use. Community discussion emphasized that mileage-based degradation, not just calendar time, drives when a flush is actually needed.242526272829

Side-access method, spelled out — belt + power steering pump removal (2024-08 report, expands the "lateral access" option above). A separate thread details exactly what the "lateral access" approach above requires: remove the serpentine/drive belt and its tensioner, then remove the power steering pump to reach the thermostat from the side. Reported time for this method: roughly 30 minutes including a short break, noticeably faster than the intake-manifold-removal approach. Both access methods still require fresh coolant and careful reassembly to avoid reintroducing air pockets. A Drive2 write-up on the front (intake-manifold-removal) method was shared as a reference: https://www.drive2.ru/l/588507002771096518/31323334
Brief corroboration on aftermarket thermostat quality (2024-10 report). One owner separately recommended thermostat replacement as effective, reporting good results with aftermarket options — a short, low-detail corroboration of the community's general thermostat-replacement guidance documented above.35
