Burning-oil smell in winter climate mode

Symptom. A fresh burnt-motor-oil smell from under the hood appears specifically when the winter climate mode (snowflake icon) is activated on the dashboard. The smell is intermittent and strictly season-dependent — absent in summer, present in winter — and is not traced to an exhaust or engine-bay leak by the reporting owners. Diagnostic theories raised — none confirmed.
