AKPP error P081929 — shift-correction fault
Tags: #automatic-transmission · #bsm · #water-ingress
Some advice here concerns sub-zero winters and is less relevant in a hot climate.
Symptom: fault code P081929 shows up on an AKPP (automatic transmission) diagnostic scan, labeled as belonging to "Bestune" in the diagnostic tool's vehicle database 1. Driving behavior: the transmission otherwise shifts normally, but occasionally downshifts on its own for a few seconds before returning to normal automatic mode; during the event the dashboard gear display shows M2/M3/M4 instead of D 12. This specific code is obscure enough that it isn't listed in FAW's standard error-code reference, and getting a shop to even read it correctly was difficult — out of 5 service shops tried, only one could read the code at all, and even that was described as "kind of" successful 34.
Suspected causes. (1) Water damage to AKPP control connectors/module — in this owner's case, traced to sunroof drain-hose connections leaking near the wheel wells over the preceding winter; the leak point was found and sealed 56. This matches other reports in this knowledge base where a wet cabin the prior season correlates with electrical faults surfacing months later. (2) Oxidized electrical connectors specifically in the brake module (BSM) — worth checking given BSM's broader pattern of moisture-related failures documented elsewhere in this section 7. (3) Generally dirty/oxidized contact pins in connectors near the fuse block area 7.
Suggested diagnostics. Disconnect the battery for about 10 minutes to clear the stored code as a first step; check all connector contacts near the fuse block, and specifically inspect the BSM block's connectors for oxidation 7. If wiring investigation is needed, be prepared for this to take real effort — this owner described it as "having to dig through the wiring" 8.
