DRL failures — cold, water, wire chafing

Aftermarket LED DRL installation via the front headlight connector. For installing add-on LED DRLs without cutting into the A-pillar or bumper: wire the DRL into the front headlight connector, tapping power (red/black) and the turn-signal line (yellow). Wired this way, the DRL behaves like factory-integrated lighting: it lights as a brake/parking light when the headlights are off, switches to DRL mode when headlights are on, and still functions as an independent turn signal. This fender-wiring connection point allows a full install without touching the A-pillar or bumper trim 12345 6789.
Owners report DRL/side-light failures from at least four distinct causes.
Cold-weather LED dropout. DRL/side lights (габариты) can fail intermittently in freezing temperatures (below −35°C). One side typically keeps working reliably while the other side shows dropout — two of three diodes lit, one weak, or intermittent failure. Root cause is unclear: possibly the LED module itself, an electronic control fault, or connector corrosion. One owner reported this recurring over a 2-year period on the same car 10.
Water ingress into the LED DRL unit. The LED daytime-running-light units are prone to water ingress causing internal condensation/misting. When water gets in, the unit can fail and short the circuit, blowing the fuse shared with the rear marker lights and fog lights. Symptom noticed first: the front DRL "chudit" — running at half brightness and flickering — before failing outright 11. Immediate/temporary fix: disconnect the wiring to that unit to remove fire risk while waiting for a replacement part; permanent fix is replacing the DXO/DRL unit. Root cause appears to be seal degradation letting water in 1112.
Wire chafing in the front bumper area. DRL wiring in the front bumper can be damaged by abrasion against the bumper's reinforcement bar, causing DRL failure. On inspection, thin wires in the harness were found frayed, with at least one broken entirely, from rubbing against the bumper reinforcement 13. Fix: remove the radiator grille (2 bolts + a couple of clips near the hood-latch area, pulls off toward you, no other clips) 1415161718; pull the damaged harness section up and out; solder/repair the break; seal all connections with sealant and "феликсо"/insulating tape; reseal the connector with sealant to keep water out 19131420. No corrosion was found at the break in this case — the fix used a fair amount of sealant regardless, as a precaution 20.
Perforated wire after rain exposure (separate case). Another owner's DRLs failed after rain — flickering, then extinguishing completely; with headlights on the DRL units still work as ordinary parking lights, they just don't function independently anymore. Diagnosis pointed to a perforated wire in the harness near the front-left wheel, at the point where a single wire emerges from the main bundle and splits to feed both the left and right DRL; the wire was damaged/pinched near the bumper reinforcement (усилитель бампера) 21222324. Moisture in the connector block near the front-left wheel (where the DRL connections are made) is also a possible cause if both sides fail together — check for moisture there too 25. Fix: repair/replace the damaged wire section or reseat the connector. The DRL fuse is a 5–10A fuse located under the steering wheel 2226.
Replacement part cost. A replacement DRL unit was described as a hard-to-find item at the time of purchase (2024), costing roughly 10,000 RUB (RU market, January 2025) 2728.
Dashboard-gauge bulb rapid burnout traced to the same DRL connector below the radiator. A distinct symptom worth cross-referencing here: dashboard gauge lights (especially the rear indicators) burning out repeatedly within about 5 minutes of driving. Root cause traced to the same connector fitting described elsewhere in this card — the connector below the radiator that feeds the DRL — which had corroded internally and was shorting; this had happened before, about 2 years earlier 2930. Check and clean/replace this specific connector socket if you see rapid dashboard-bulb burnout, even though it looks like an unrelated instrument-cluster problem at first.
No dedicated DRL relay — brightness is set by a microchip in the LED housing itself. Confirming and extending the wiring notes above: the X80's DRL circuit has no dedicated relay; power control uses direct + supply modulation rather than a relay switching cycle. Brightness varies automatically depending on whether the main headlights are on or off — this brightness control is handled by a microchip built into the LED housing itself, not by an external module 313233. Practical implication: when troubleshooting, don't expect to find (or need to test) a separate DRL relay in the fuse box on most units — the smarts live inside the light housing.
The 16-pin DRL/parking-light connector below the radiator — corrosion as a root cause misdiagnosed as a BCM failure. An experienced member identified a specific, high-value diagnostic shortcut: a 16-pin connector mounted below the radiator on the driver's side carries the DRL circuit (3 of its pins are dedicated to DRL power). This connector develops green corrosion/oxidation on those pins, and a single failure here has been observed to cause a cluster of seemingly unrelated symptoms together: DRLs staying on constantly, rear tail lights running at half brightness, and dashboard lights staying on without the key inserted — exactly the kind of multi-symptom electrical gremlin that gets misdiagnosed as a BCM/BSM failure (see that card) when the real fault is this one connector 34353637. Fix: either replace the entire connector, or cut it down and re-terminate to a smaller 2-pin connector carrying just what's needed 34. The member reporting this stated with high confidence that this exact connector ("козявка" — a "bug"/gremlin, colloquially) is very likely the culprit whenever this symptom cluster appears 38.
DRL out but parking lights working — power-path diagnostic sequence. When DRL fails to light but the ordinary parking lights work fine (indicating the bulb itself and its basic power feed are not the whole story), follow this sequence: (1) check the connector under the left front wheel arch that carries both DRL and parking-light power (the same connector area referenced above, though this report frames it as being at the wheel arch rather than "below the radiator" — likely the same harness run described from a different access point) 39 40; (2) test for 12V at that connector using an incandescent test light specifically, not a multimeter — a multimeter can show current present even when the wire can't actually carry a real load, giving a false "power is fine" reading; one owner's misdiagnosis from trusting a multimeter reading cost them a replacement headlight (~10,000 RUB, RU market, February 2026) before they found the real fault 4142; (3) if power is confirmed present at the connector with a test light, the DRL module itself has failed and needs replacement; if no power is present, trace the wiring back to the engine-bay fuse 404342. Wiring damage on the right bumper-reinforcement path is called out as a common wear point worth inspecting directly, similar to the wire-chafing case described earlier in this card 43.
Turn-signal DRL suppression (Sport trim). On Sport-trim X80s, a dashboard settings option automatically disables the daytime running lights whenever a turn signal is activated, so oncoming traffic isn't dazzled mid-turn. The function is toggled on/off from the instrument-cluster settings menu 4445.
DRL wire repair via the wheel well, without removing the front bumper. A broken wire feeding the DRL ("ходовая") can be accessed and repaired without a full bumper removal: (1) remove the wheel on the affected side; (2) pull/bend the plastic wheel-arch liner (подкрылок) back toward the rear; (3) reach the DRL assembly and its wiring through the wheel well; (4) trace the wire back to the break/source point; (5) repair or replace the damaged section; (6) reinstall the liner. If the damaged wire is too short to splice cleanly, an alternative is to reroute a short replacement wire sourced from the opposite-side headlight harness 46474849505152.
Light-switch position behavior differs between restyled and pre-restyled models. A specification note distinct from the failure modes documented above — this is normal, expected behavior, not a fault, but it explains DRL-related confusion some owners report. On restyled models (2019+): switch position 1 activates DXO/DRL at lower intensity; position 2 dims the DXO and turns on the gabarity (parking/position lights) fully; position 3 turns on the low-beam headlights (ближний свет). Fog lights may respond differently depending on wiring. On pre-restyled models, the behavior differs: DXO is on by default regardless of switch position, and the gabarity and headlight positions are separate, independent settings rather than a stacked brightness/mode progression. In short, on restyled cars turning the switch to position 1 changes the DXO's brightness while it stays on, whereas pre-restyled cars don't have that same behavior 535455565758.
VSM control, auto vs. manual DRL modes, and a wiring-diagram-confirmed chafe repair. The DRL circuit is controlled by the VSM (vehicle stability module), which supports two operation modes: auto (DRL always on) and manual (DRL only when the headlights are on) 59. Flickering DRL is usually a symptom of a shorted or chafed power wire — commonly in the under-bumper area, where the factory harness routing is poorly secured — consistent with the chafing failure mode documented above 60. Diagnostic step, per the module's own wiring diagram: check for 12V at contact A2 on the VSM connector; the excerpted diagram shows this pin fed from the B/R(F) line through fuse C12 to the DRL modules (labeled FF3/FF8, "Position Light LH/RH Day Running Light") 60. In one confirmed case, the damaged wire/connector was accessible and repairable through the wheel well without removing the bumper — matching the wheel-well repair procedure already documented above — and the DRL module itself was accessible enough that a hot-glue/adhesive fix to re-secure or re-seal it is a common, low-cost repair 61.
Aftermarket DRL strip combined with the turn-signal circuit. One owner wired an aftermarket daytime running light (DRL, ДХО) strip into the turn-signal circuit by replacing the stock turn lamps with a dual (white/amber) lamp. Switched +12 V (the "включение +" feed that is live after the ignition lock) was taken from the cabin fuse block to the left of the driver's legs. With this wiring the white DRL stays lit and the amber indicator flashes when the turn signal is used 62.
