EPB (electronic parking brake) issues

Some advice here concerns sub-zero winters and is less relevant in a hot climate.
EPB error from a shared EPB/GLONASS connector short. A separate case: an EPB error was caused by a failed connector in the comfort module, with corroded/shorted yellow and blue wires — this connector was shared between the EPB circuit and the GLONASS block under the driver's seat. After rewiring and isolating the short, the parking brake worked normally again. This points to a design weakness: using one dual-function connector for both EPB and the GLONASS emergency-call system (see the GLONASS card) means a fault in one can present as a fault in the other 1 2.
Two related EPB (electric parking brake) failure patterns are reported.
Repeatedly blown 5A fuse. Symptom: the EPB's fuse keeps blowing every time the electric parking brake is activated, leaving the parking brake non-functional 3. Cause: moisture/corrosion in the connector located under the driver's seat 456. Fix options: (1) replace the connector block with a fresh set of male/female pins and proper sealing grommets — one owner did this by simply buying a replacement connector pair ("колодка с папой и мамой") with a sealing collar rather than trying to repair the corroded original 4; (2) if the connector itself isn't salvageable, replace the entire brake module. Related procedure for setting the electric parking brake noted in this thread: hold the button while the engine is running, then turn the engine off, and leave the key in the lock/off position.
EPB warning light after road impacts (bumps/potholes). A separate symptom: the EPB warning light can illuminate after hitting bumps or potholes, sometimes together with the airbag warning light triggering from the same kind of road impact 7. Troubleshooting sequence: (1) check and clean the electrical contacts under the driver's seat — the same general area implicated in the blown-fuse case above 89 10; (2) inspect all ABS sensor connections for corrosion or loose wires, since ABS-sensor faults were flagged as a contributing area for similar warning-light triggers in this thread 11. Diagnostic note: this may be a firmware/program glitch specific to the restyle (facelift) model requiring a scanner to properly diagnose the underlying EPB system fault rather than a purely mechanical/connector issue 12. Also note: pre-restyle models are described as generally more prone to sensor faults in winter, which is a relevant seasonal risk factor even if not the direct cause in a given case. Important limitation: simply disconnecting the battery does not clear this fault on its own if the underlying contacts are intermittent/marginal rather than fully failed — contact cleaning is needed in addition to any reset attempt.
Disabling the EPB on a lift — the correct engine shutdown sequence. A separate, non-fault-related procedure worth documenting here: on restyle (facelift) models with an electronic handbrake, raising the car on a lift requires a specific shutdown sequence to prevent the EPB from automatically re-engaging when the engine is cut, which would otherwise clamp the rear wheels while they're off the ground. Procedure: (1) shift the transmission to Neutral; (2) press and hold the brake pedal; (3) while still holding the brake pedal, press and hold the electronic parking-brake button; (4) turn off the engine while still holding the button; (5) only then release the brake pedal. Skipping this sequence (e.g. shutting off the engine normally) causes the EPB to engage automatically the moment the engine dies, defeating the point of having the car up on a lift 131415.
EPB stops engaging after brake-pad replacement — caused by ignition being on during caliper work. A specific trigger pattern distinct from the connector-corrosion cases documented above: if the electronic parking brake stops engaging right after a brake-pad job, the cause is having the ignition on while working on the caliper (the EPB motor can end up mid-travel/out of sync when the caliper is manipulated with power live). Recovery procedure: (1) disconnect the battery negative terminal for 2-3 minutes, then reconnect; (2) turn the ignition on and shift to Park; (3) pull the parking-brake button repeatedly while holding it up until it engages. If that doesn't work, read and clear ECU error codes with a diagnostic tool. Park on a flat surface while doing this recovery, to avoid transmission strain when the brake re-engages 16171819.
EPB shows an ERB error and won't engage — rear pads hold by mechanical pressure alone. Another EPB failure pattern reported: an ERB error appears and the electronic parking brake won't engage, leaving the rear pads holding the car only via whatever mechanical clamping pressure remains (not actively engaged). Troubleshooting sequence: (1) have a dealer attempt a brake-adaptation reset; (2) reset via battery disconnect (10 minutes); (3) check the fuses under the driver-side footwell panel; (4) if none of that resolves it, suspect a BCM (body control module) fault. On restyled models, the EPB control block is located under the cargo-area trim on the driver side — useful to know when accessing it for inspection 2021222324252627 2829303132.
