Fuel reserve warning light behavior

Tags: #warning-light

The fuel reserve indicator light — shown on the instrument cluster once roughly 70 km of estimated range remains — is triggered by the car's calculated remaining range, which is based on recent fuel-consumption history (the last 30–50 km driven), not by a fixed remaining-liters threshold 12. Practical consequence: the exact fuel level (liters) that triggers the light varies with driving style. Under urban driving with high consumption (~15 L/100km), the light comes on around 10–11 liters remaining; under highway driving at ~7–8 L/100km, it comes on around 5–7 liters remaining 34. Because the range estimate recalculates continuously from recent consumption, the light's on/off status can change mid-trip: e.g. exiting a city (high consumption) onto a highway (lower consumption) can cause the estimated range to climb back above the trigger threshold and the warning to clear itself, purely because the car recalculated based on the new driving pattern rather than because fuel was added 4.

Displayed range is a consumption-based estimate, separate from the tank float sensor. Consistent with the range-based trigger logic above: the fuel gauge display shows a calculated estimated driving range (e.g. "250 km remaining") derived from recent fuel-consumption history, not a direct read of the tank float sensor. Resetting the trip/consumption data via the steering-wheel buttons resets this calculation, which can make the displayed range jump because the car now assumes a different (fresh) consumption baseline. The physical fuel float sensor in the tank reads the actual liquid level but is a separate signal from what's shown as "range remaining" on screen — the two can appear to disagree without either being wrong 5678.
