The FAW X80 has a GLONASS emergency-call module mounted under the front seats; several owners initially mistook it for a speaker ^{12 34}. It uses a built-in free SIM card whose only purpose is connecting to the MCS emergency operator — it does not provide general connectivity or real-time tracking ⁵. It determines the car's location via GNSS (GLONASS) satellites and refines it with cellular tower triangulation, then transmits the coordinates to emergency services over the cellular network on activation ⁶⁷⁸. Activation is manual, via the dashboard SOS button; automatic activation on airbag deployment is also possible depending on model/trim ^{910 11}. Because the system is safety equipment, owners are advised to test it periodically (e.g. via a documented test procedure, mentioned as existing in the manual) rather than leave it completely unverified — one owner reported a friend's unit genuinely helped after a serious accident ^1012131411.

Water damage to the module — irreversible failure. The GLONASS/GPS module (a Fort Telecom FORT-4128B-type unit) sits under the driver's seat with its wiring harness and connectors ¹⁵¹⁶. Water entering from above corrodes the connectors, and the resulting damage is effectively irreversible: photos of an affected unit show green verdigris corrosion on connectors and interior components, with multicolor wiring oxidized ^1718192021. One owner reports the module did not respond during an actual accident — i.e. once corroded, the module can silently stop functioning for emergency response despite showing no obvious external symptom ²².
