Hot air leak — steering column vent damper
Tags: #hvac · #heat-shield · #unresolved
One owner experienced strange hot air blowing onto their knees from under the steering column, even with the climate control set to cold. The problem occurred in summer and specifically on the highway, intensifying at speed. Possible causes investigated included a thermal heat shield passing engine heat into the cabin — but on inspection the shield was found intact, ruling that out as the cause. The problem resolved itself spontaneously after some time, with no mechanical fix ever applied. A later, unrelated diagnostic scan on the same car did turn up an error code related to the thermal/ventilation damper system, which may or may not be connected to this earlier symptom — treat this as a lower-confidence, unresolved report rather than a documented fix 123.
