Immobilizer module — location and water damage

Tags: #immobilizer · #water-ingress · #cold-weather · #connector

Some advice here concerns sub-zero winters and is less relevant in a hot climate.

Normal blinking of the immobilizer icon. The dashboard immobilizer lock symbol (подкова / horseshoe icon) shows on startup and blinks to confirm ongoing key-to-vehicle communication. Continued blinking after ignition-off, once the car is locked/armed, is normal — it indicates the immobilizer is active, and does not meaningfully drain the battery 1234. Reconfirmed in a separate thread: a blinking red "lock" icon (красный замок) with the ignition off and the car locked is normal operation, confirming the engine is immobilized as an anti-theft measure; the light extinguishes once the correct key is detected at startup 5678.

Location. Reports place the immobilizer (anti-theft) control module in two nearby but distinct spots depending on trim/generation: (1) on the left side of the dashboard, behind the small glove box compartment 910; (2) near the front passenger's right foot area, under the plastic trim, above floor level, on Restyling-generation cars 11121314. Both are consistent with an under-dash location reachable from inside the cabin without major disassembly — check whichever spot matches your specific generation/trim first.

Cold-weather failure from corrosion (not a hard module failure). Symptom: smart-key and keyless-entry (bless-key) functionality stops working reliably once ambient temperature drops below roughly +5°C, while working fine in warm weather — one owner's car worked perfectly warm and completely failed keyless functions any time it was +5°C or colder 1516. A remote-autostart "обходчик" (bypass module) tied into the same circuit showed the same temperature-dependent failure pattern 17. Root cause: water intrusion into the immobilizer module causing contact oxidation (окислы), not a full module failure — the temperature dependency itself is diagnostic, since corrosion's electrical resistance is temperature-sensitive in a way a fully dead module wouldn't be 1819. In this case water didn't get directly into the module housing — general cabin moisture caused the oxidation via a more indirect path 20. The car in question was about 3 years old, first developed symptoms in its first winter, and needed the immobilizer block itself dealt with (see next section) 2115.

Repair: clean, don't necessarily replace. Community consensus, contradicting a dealer's more aggressive recommendation: open the immobilizer case and thoroughly clean all contacts and circuit-board elements rather than replacing the whole unit — this community approach was reported successful, while the dealer had instead recommended full replacement 18. Photos from this case show visible white oxidation coating (окислы) specifically around connector areas and solder joints.

Related failure: "key not recognized" after rain, connector reseating fix. A different but related symptom on a Restyling-generation car: after rain/moisture exposure, the dash shows "key not recognized" and the car won't start, despite the keys themselves working normally and ignition otherwise behaving normally 22. Suggested root cause path to check first: moisture in the VSM causing the steering-column lock to disengage incorrectly, and separately the Gateway module (see the PKE/smart-key card for more on Gateway) 23. Fix that resolved this for multiple owners even with no visible corrosion or standing water present: locate the immobilizer block (right passenger footwell area) and remove/reseat all of its connector plugs — oxidized or simply loose contacts were enough to prevent key-signal detection without any deeper module damage 122414. This car had been parked outside in rain for three to four days before the fault appeared, supporting the moisture- triggered-contact-issue theory over a hard failure 25.

No-start with the dashboard on: reseat the connector blocks. An owner had a no-start where the dashboard lit and the ignition came on but pressing start did nothing and the starter did not crank. Members suggested water from a sunroof drain may have corroded the comfort block (комфорт) under the driver's left-foot trim, and that the key-reading (immobilizer) block sits under the front passenger's right foot. After one owner unplugged and reseated all the connectors on that block the car started; another member suggests pressing the start button with the key itself, because the button has its own antenna 26272829.
