Start/Stop key fob battery replacement

Tags: #key-fob · #battery · #part-number

Battery type: CR2032 (12V) per one owner ¹; another owner who opened a fob found a Maxell (Hitachi Maxell, Japan) CR1620 coin cell on the circuit board and says it is not a CR2032, and describes opening it by pressing a tool into the slot at the top and twisting to split the shell ²³. The two reports conflict, so check the cell in your own fob before buying.

Procedure: 1. Press the logo button to eject the physical spare key blade. 2. Insert a flat tool (a small flathead screwdriver or a dental spatula works well) into the slot on the side of the fob body. 3. Rotate/twist to open — the fob splits apart on internal snap clips, similar to opening a TV remote. 4. Replace the CR2032 battery, then snap the case back together.⁴⁵⁶

Care tips. The plastic housing scratches easily, so avoid metal tools with sharp edges where possible; a dental instrument (spatula) is gentler. Some owners lightly heat the case edge with a lighter to soften/smooth burrs before prying, which also helps avoid visible damage to the housing.⁵⁶
