Key fob programming and battery

Prices and suppliers on this page are Russian-market (RUB, at the dates shown). Verify locally before relying on them in Syria.

Some advice here concerns sub-zero winters and is less relevant in a hot climate.

Battery-disconnect trick for general fob glitches. Beyond the keyless-entry-specific recovery below, a battery-terminal disconnect (a few minutes, negative terminal) is a broadly useful fix for a fob that won't lock/unlock even with a fresh battery — it resets electronic module memory and often resolves false error states and "hiccups" without a dealer visit 123456 7.

CR1620 battery, confirmed part and photos. The remote key fob uses a CR1620 tablet-type cell, confirmed with battery-compartment photos 891011 — consistent with the CR1620 pricing already noted below.

Rapid CR2032 drain from proximity to the car; reliable brands. A separate, common battery complaint: the fob's CR2032 depletes in as little as 2-3 weeks for some owners. Cause: storing the key close to the car causes constant RF-signal drain from the central-locking system. Fixes: (1) replace the CR2032 (~150-300 RUB on Ozon, RU market, August 2025); (2) store the key away from the car (a different room, 10m+ away). Reported brand reliability: Renata lasted 1+ year, Energizer/Duracell/Varta all eventually wear out; generic/no-name batches were flagged as unreliable — Renata CR2032 from Ozon was the most reliable option in this thread 1213141516171819 2021222324252627 28.

Fob stops responding to door unlock — reset via ignition/door cycling. If the fob stops responding to unlock commands specifically: (1) cycle the ignition on/off five times; (2) open and close the doors six times. This resets the adaptive locking system. Caution: on some vehicles this procedure can cause doors to unlock instead of lock if buttons are pressed mid-adaptation; a YouTube tutorial exists, and some vehicles need extra configuration beyond this basic sequence 2930 3132333435.

Home DIY reprogramming, no dealer. X80 fobs can be reprogrammed at home following a YouTube tutorial matched to the model year, without a dealer visit — useful when the nearest dealer is 300+ km away, as in one owner's case 36373839.

Contact cleaning restores sync after a battery swap. When both remote keys stopped opening/closing doors after a battery replacement, cleaning the key contacts (not just swapping the battery) resolved it — the keys reprogrammed and stopped losing sync. Moisture/oxidation on fob contacts is a common X80 electrical issue, not unique to one key 40.

Mechanical key as smart-key-battery-dead fallback. If the smart-key fob's battery dies (or the key is lost), the mechanical key hidden inside the fob can open the doors manually, and the immobilizer/engine-start still work with just the mechanical key even without fob battery power. No alarm sounds when using the mechanical key if no aftermarket alarm is installed; if a StarLine-type aftermarket alarm is installed, it may sound when the door is opened this way — check the alarm settings or find its hidden panic/disarm button 4142434445.

Cloning is not possible — only physical keys are registerable. X80 smart keys cannot be cloned or programmed without factory tools; only a physical key with a personal cut can be registered via the DIY algorithm/procedures above. Cloning attempts in Russia (including Moscow) have not succeeded; one report of a full replacement key available from a person in Siberia, but they were rarely reachable 4647 48.

Unresponsive fob, fresh battery. If a key fob stops responding to lock/unlock commands despite a fresh battery and a working LED indicator, it likely needs reprogramming; a DIY procedure found on YouTube worked for one owner without a dealer visit 49505152.

Pairing a second key knocks out the first. When pairing new key fobs with the factory signaling system, one key can pair successfully while the other becomes inoperative. Fix: make sure new keys are bound to a free/unused memory cell in the ECU, not to a previously-used one; this may also require adapting the engine control unit to recognize the new keys in addition to immobilizer programming 53545556.

Recovery after a battery disconnect. Disconnecting the car battery terminal makes the keyless-entry system stop responding to lock/unlock commands. Fixes reported: slam the doors hard 3–5 times (a mechanical pairing trick), or follow a ~3-minute YouTube procedure searchable as "прописать ключ на фав х80" (can be done at home or by a technician) 57585960. One owner needed a second attempt after rushing the first 61. Note: the fob's LED indicator lighting up is not a reliable indicator of battery health — a low key battery is still worth checking as a first step 6263.

Battery type and price. The remote key uses a CR1620 battery, about 22 RUB per unit or 100 RUB for a 5-pack at the Всеинструменты retailer (RU market, Dec 2024) 64. Battery compartment design differs by trim: the base mechanical-key trim and the AKPP push-button-start trim have physically different battery compartments 65666768.

Troubleshooting order when a fob stops responding. (1) First try a fresh battery — typically CR2032 69; note flaky/intermittent non-response can happen occasionally even without a dead battery 70. (2) If a fresh battery doesn't fix it, attempt key rebinding/pairing — YouTube tutorials specific to the X80 exist and were used successfully 71. (3) If multiple key fobs fail simultaneously (not just one), suspect the BSM (body/brake control module) with oxidized contacts from moisture ingress — this needs disassembly, cleaning the contacts with electrical contact spray, drying thoroughly, and reassembly 72737475. (4) A mechanical "door-pounding" trick — slamming doors hard — can sometimes help reinitialize communication as a stopgap while sourcing a proper fix 76. One owner's case: both key fobs stopped responding simultaneously despite battery replacement and a battery-terminal reset, and only one fob was recovered after extensive troubleshooting — the second stayed dead, suggesting the root cause in stubborn cases can be partial/inconsistent rather than a single clean fix 7775.

CR2032 → CR3032 battery upgrade. Stock CR2032 batteries reportedly died quickly in some owners' fobs (as fast as 2–3 weeks); CR3032 was tried as a longer-lasting alternative and one owner reports it lasting about a year. Caution: CR3032 is slightly thicker than CR2032 and can damage the top contact spring if forced in carelessly, so install gently 78. Reported battery-brand quality difference: Energizer-branded CR2032s performed poorly for one owner (repeated failures within weeks, enough to make him order replacements in bulk); ordinary/shop-brand batteries performed better for him 7980. Always test the actual contact/terminal voltage (e.g. touch-test on the tongue, or a multimeter) rather than assuming a battery is dead or fine from age alone — "charge seems present but electronics don't respond" was reported as a distinguishing symptom pointing to something other than a simple dead battery 80.

Requires multiple presses / intermittent no-response — battery vs. chip degradation. A separate symptom pattern: pressing the fob's button sometimes fails to unlock/start the car, requiring repeated presses; the car has also started intermittently not being "seen" and needing the fob physically inserted into the start/stop button as a fallback 81. Suspected causes, in order to check: (1) fob battery degradation — try this first, it's the cheap/easy fix; (2) chip degradation inside the fob itself, which is not something a battery swap will fix 81 82. X80 push-button (proximity) fobs cannot be reprogrammed or cloned locally — no protocol/procedure for this was found, at least in the Samara region, meaning a chip-degraded push-button fob likely needs outright replacement rather than reprogramming 82. By contrast, the mechanical-key fob variant does have a known programming algorithm, and there's a good chance it also applies to the push-button variant's underlying chip — but reprogramming it without proper tools/training carries real risk of bricking the key, and even some dealers who attempt mechanical-key reprogramming report uncertain results, so treat this as a specialist job with no guaranteed outcome, not a DIY fix 82.

"Key not detected" in cold/wet weather — check the fob battery first. Symptom: a "key not detected" message appears sporadically during rain or snow, then clears on its own. Cause: low battery in the key-fob remote. Fix: replace the fob battery (check its charge level before assuming a deeper fault). Workaround for wet weather while the battery issue is unresolved: place the key directly on the instrument panel within the driver's line of sight — some owners report this improves detection reliability. Root cause is likely RF signal attenuation in wet conditions combined with an already-weak battery; the occurrence is rare (roughly once per 10–100 km) and does not affect engine operation once the car is already running 8384 85868788. A related, milder report: some owners see the same "key not detected" warning specifically while braking, intermittently and especially in wet weather — this can resolve itself after a few occurrences without any intervention, which is consistent with the same weak-signal/weak-battery pattern rather than indicating a separate fault 8990.

Fob unresponsive after a battery swap or fuse work — needs re-learning. Consistent with the battery-disconnect fix documented above: if a key fob stops responding after the car's battery was swapped or fuses were replaced, the key(s) may have simply become unpaired from the vehicle rather than having a hardware fault. The fix is the standard re-learning procedure, followed step-by-step; if any step in the sequence fails, restart the whole procedure from the beginning rather than trying to resume partway through — this resolves the majority of fob-responsiveness complaints seen in this thread 9192939495969798.

Central-lock key fob stops working after a battery replacement — reprogramming required. A related report: after replacing the key fob's own battery, central locking stopped responding, requiring the key to be reprogrammed. The exact button-press/timing sequence for this varied and wasn't fully pinned down in the thread — it involves inserting the key in the lock cylinder and turning it several times while performing a specific sequence of actions — and the owner in this case ultimately had it resolved by having the dealer reprogram the key rather than working out the DIY sequence 99100101102103 104105106107108109110111112113 114115116117118.

"Key out of zone" warning after a battery swap — normal, self-resolving. After replacing the remote key's battery, the dashboard may show a "Key out of zone" (ключ вне зоны) warning even when the key is inside the vehicle 119120. This is normal behavior, not a malfunction — it can appear intermittently during operation for a while after a battery swap 121122. No action is needed; it resolves on its own.
