Power windows and remote-control functions

Relearning window auto-down after a battery disconnect. After the car battery has been disconnected, the one-touch auto-down/auto-up feature on the power windows needs relearning. Procedure, from the driver's seat: (1) turn the ignition key to ACC (not started); (2) hold the window-down button for 5 seconds until the window is fully lowered; (3) release, then hold the window-up button for 5 seconds until fully raised; (4) release, then hold the down button again for 5 seconds until fully lowered again. After this sequence, a single tap of the button triggers full automatic motion in either direction. This affects all four doors' auto-function, learned from the driver's controls 123.

OEM remote-control functions. The factory key fob offers several convenience functions beyond lock/unlock: a long press on the lock button closes all windows and the sunroof; a long press on the unlock button opens all windows and the sunroof; three quick, light taps on the turn-signal stalk trigger a 3-flash "lane change" signal without holding the stalk; and after unlocking the driver's door, a double-press of the unlock button opens all the other locks too 45678.

Auto-down malfunction after reaching full-up position. A window that rises fully, appears to stop at the top, then immediately lowers itself again with no driver input, points to oxidized electrical contacts or a weak/parasitic ground signal at the window switch rather than a motor or regulator fault. Symptom: the window pops up to its set point, then drops back down on its own, requiring a manual pull to raise it again. Likely cause: a faulty switch-button contact, or the window control module receiving a spurious "close" signal from a degraded contact. Diagnosis: inspect the window switch contacts for corrosion, and test for unwanted continuity when the button is not pressed 9101112.

Passenger windows unresponsive from the driver's door panel — water damage or module fault. When passenger-window buttons stop responding from the driver's-door control panel, but the individual door switches still work each window locally, the diagnostic steps are: (1) check for water intrusion or spill damage in the driver's-door switch panel, which corrodes the contacts and is the most commonly cited cause; (2) try replacing the driver-side window control module; (3) some owners report partial success with aftermarket or Mazda6-compatible replacement modules. A battery clear or module reprogramming may also be needed after the swap. One user (message 8841) offered a dissenting diagnosis — suggesting a burnt individual switch button rather than the whole module being at fault, so it's worth testing the switch itself before replacing the full module 131415161718.

Rear windows unresponsive from the driver's door — check the child safety lock first. A simpler, easily-missed cause of the same general symptom: if the rear windows specifically don't respond to the driver-side control buttons, verify that the child safety lock button on the driver's door isn't engaged. When active, this button blocks rear windows from being controlled from the driver's panel and restricts them to the manual switches on the rear doors only — this is expected behavior, not a fault 1920.

Alternate, simpler auto-close relearn procedure reported by some owners. As an alternative to the ACC-key procedure documented above, some owners report success with a simpler sequence: fully close the window and hold the "up" button for an extra 3-5 seconds past the fully closed position; then fully open the window and hold the "down" button for an extra 3-5 seconds past fully open. This lets the module relearn the end-of-travel positions and works for all four power windows. Given this simpler procedure isn't universally reported as sufficient, try the full ACC-key sequence above first if this shorter version doesn't take 212223.
