Rain/light sensor (auto-wiper) unreliable behavior

Not to be confused with the dashboard sphere. The rain sensor described in this card is mounted on the rear-view-mirror support and is a physically separate part from the black spherical light/sun sensor lower on the dashboard, which handles automatic headlights and climate-control assistance — see the dashboard-light-sensor card for that component. The community spent time conflating the two before settling on this distinction.

The combined rain-and-light sensor that drives automatic wiper activation is widely reported as unreliable — it either fails to activate the wipers during rain, or cycles them continuously at max setting ¹²³. The issue affects multiple owners, not an isolated unit ²³. Adjusting the sensitivity setting to maximum does not fix it ⁴⁵. Repositioning/recleaning the sensor also didn't help for at least one owner ³. Behavior can be inconsistent — sometimes the sensor responds correctly right after an engine restart, other times not ⁶. One community-suggested workaround: attach transparent tape over the sensor at the windshield to improve its detection ⁷.

Conflict: symptoms reported vary between owners — some describe the sensor triggering on sunlight rather than rain, while others report it failing to detect moisture at all; both were reported as ongoing, unresolved issues ⁸⁹.
