Speedometer over-reads vs. actual (GPS) speed by design

Tags: #speedometer

Owner-measured discrepancy, tire-size effect. Community measurements converge on the same picture from a different angle: the X80's speedometer consistently over-reports versus GPS, typically by 5-15 km/h (e.g. speedo 85 km/h vs GPS ~79 km/h; at 180 GPS km/h, speedo may read ~195). This is present with the stock 215/60R17 tire spec; upgrading to 225/60R17 reduces but doesn't eliminate the gap. The odometer is comparatively accurate (only ~1-1.5% error on stock tires), and average cruise-control speed (computed from distance/time) is accurate — it's specifically the real-time speedometer needle/digital readout that over-reports ^{1 23456}.

Vehicle speed is measured via the ABS wheel-speed sensors, with the primary/reference signal coming from the front-right ABS sensor ⁷⁸. The speedometer is intentionally calibrated to read approximately 10% higher than the actual (e.g. GPS-measured) speed — this is standard regulatory practice across the industry (per technical regulations), not a defect specific to this car ⁹. Example given: an actual speed of 58 km/h shows as roughly 62–63 km/h on the dash ⁷. Note: tire size within the stock range (17-inch wheels, 60 profile — the standard parameters for this car) does not introduce additional discrepancy beyond this built-in offset ¹⁰.
