Steering wheel clockspring (contact ribbon)
Tags: #steering-wheel · #cruise-control
Steering-wheel control buttons (cruise control, audio) can fail when the ribbon contact spiral inside the steering column — the clockspring (улитка, literally "snail") — degrades. This spiral ribbon carries electrical signals from the buttons on the rotating steering wheel to the fixed wiring in the column, and wears out or breaks over time/use. A replacement ribbon is available from parts suppliers. Installation requires carefully counting/tracking the spiral's rotation during removal and reinstallation, since the ribbon has a limited range of travel and must be centered correctly to avoid binding or breaking on full steering-wheel lock 123.
