Battery life and failure patterns

• Lifespan. Reports range from about 4-5 years by factory design ¹², 5-6 years ³⁴⁵, about 5 years under good conditions with sealed batteries ⁶⁷⁸⁹¹⁰, about 6 years ^11121314, to 5-7 years ^15161718; the spread is the same rough range, not a contradiction. Tire-service staff say universal sensors last 5-6 years, while one owner says Launch sensors wear out quickly ⁵¹⁹.
• Clustered failure. The sensors were installed together at the factory, so a 2018 car losing all four around 2023 (about 5 years) is a normal battery-age pattern, not an ECU fault ²⁰²¹. Winter cold speeds up depletion of near-end-of-life batteries ¹, and several owners report full failure at about 5 years, especially in winter ⁶⁷⁸⁹¹⁰. One non-working sensor only triggers a warning light ^15161718.
• Cold and counterfeit batteries. Chinese aftermarket sensors often ship with already-old batteries; a standard cell fails outright around -30 C. Low-temperature cells exist (about 550 RUB for a -30 C rating, RU market, April 2026) but many sold on Chinese marketplaces are counterfeit; OEM-sourced cells cost more but are reportedly more reliable ²²²³²⁴.

Battery replacement (DIY and services)

• Battery type and design. The sensor (5GA037973) takes a BR2450 or CR2450 coin cell ²⁵²⁶. It is sealed and not meant to be opened; the manufacturer's intent is whole-sensor replacement ²⁷²⁸. One owner found an old sensor sealed internally with epoxy ²⁹. A good-quality CR2450 costs about 500 RUB (RU market, June 2026) and lasts about 5 years, while cheap batteries fail in the first winter below -30 C; third-party CR2032 cells have about half the capacity of the CR2450 the sensor specifies ³⁰³¹.
• Who can do it. One user says a radio-repair specialist can replace the battery; another says nobody in their city offers it, so availability varies by region ³². Batteries are difficult to replace without professional radio/RF equipment, and re-pairing or reprogramming may be needed afterwards ³⁴.
• Solvent method. Soak the sensor body in solvent for about 24 hours to soften the glue, separate the housing, find the + and - contacts on the board, desolder the old battery and solder in a new one; leads can run to an external holder for easier future swaps, at the cost of some ingress protection ^333435363738. A CR2450-2P (1200 mAh, no-name) from ChipDip was used as a step-up cell ³⁹. Whether long soaking damages the board is disputed: no damage was reported, but some suggest mechanical extraction instead ^40414243.
• Step-by-step used by some owners. Gently remove the old battery (heat gun on low if potted in epoxy), do not fully excavate it, mount the new cell externally on the sensor body, solder or crimp its leads to the original pins, seal everything with heat-shrink (critical for weatherproofing), then program with Diagzone Pro via an OBD-II interface or an Autel programmer ^{4445464748495051}.
• Durability problems. Homemade builds using 3M tape or heat-shrink can lose the battery during normal tire service. Better: wrap the sensor completely in heat-shrink and use cells with pre-welded tabs rather than soldering onto the cell, since heat damages CR2032/CR2450; CR2032T is suggested for its -20 C rating. There was no consensus on an enclosure (PVC pipe and water-filter bottle bodies were proposed) ^525354555657. A June 2026 owner who soldered an external battery after failing to extract the potted original sealed it with T7000 adhesive, which is not recommended long-term because of condensation risk, unlike heat-shrink ³⁰.
