Trunk lock water ingress and repair
Tags: #trunk · #water-ingress · #connector
Some advice here concerns sub-zero winters and is less relevant in a hot climate.
Two related failure patterns are reported for the trunk/boot lock, both traced to the same underlying cause (water ingress into the lock solenoid/connectors).
Case 1: lock stopped opening manually, remote still works. Symptom: the trunk clicks open when triggered manually from inside the car but won't actuate from the outside handle/latch at all — only the remote keyfob opens it 1. Diagnosis: check whether the latch lever ("лепесток") itself moves freely — it can get stuck/bind mechanically — and separately check whether the electrical contacts it's supposed to close are actually making contact, since a free-moving lever can still fail to close a fouled contact 23. Root cause confirmed by the owner: water — noticeable because water visibly pours out when opening the trunk right after a car wash, and winter cold makes the problem worse 45. Temporary workaround: manually push the latch lever into the locked position, then use the physical key to open it from outside 1. Fix: remove the trunk trim panel, clean all electrical terminals/connector pins ("клеммы и фишки"), and dry them 6. One owner's drying+silicone-grease treatment stopped a related symptom (a clicking sound) entirely 7. Preventive measure: apply butyl sealing tape around the trunk seal/lock area to keep water out during future car washes.
Case 2: trunk button doesn't work, remote does. Symptom: the trunk opens fine via the remote keyfob, but the physical trunk-release button does nothing 8. Because the remote-triggered release works, the lock mechanism itself is confirmed functional — the fault is isolated to the button/its switch contact, not the lock 910. Fix: same approach as case 1 — remove the rear/trunk trim, inspect and clean all electrical terminals and the button's contacts, spray the lock mechanism with a light lubricant (WD-40 or equivalent) 11. This class of fix (cleaning contacts) resolves roughly 90% of these complaints according to community experience; check the emergency mechanical trunk release first if the trunk needs to be opened urgently while diagnosing.
