Overnight battery drain from comfort-block/immobilizer moisture shorts. A distinct symptom pattern: complete battery discharge overnight after a normal shutdown, with all lights/switches checked and ruled out. Root cause: water intrusion into the comfort-block connector or the immobilizer module causes a short. Diagnosis: check for water in the driver's/passenger's footwell carpet by touch, and examine the comfort block and immobilizer connectors for corrosion from rainwater ingress — a short in these block connectors, caused by water breaching the weather seals, is what produces the parasitic drain 12.

Engine-bay water pooling near the BCM. Water can also accumulate in the engine bay during rain, especially around the BCM (Battery/Body Control Module) area — after storms, standing water has been observed in certain recesses there. Diagnosis: remove the BCM cover and visually inspect contacts for oxidation (green coloring); clean any oxidized contacts with cotton swabs and isopropyl alcohol. In one inspected case, water had been sealed around the connections with sealant (герметик) previously, and the BCM contacts were found clean and functional — i.e. a prior sealant repair can hold up, so check whether one was already done before assuming fresh damage 345.

A known issue on the X80: water can leak into the passenger compartment, leaving wet carpets and standing water in the cabin. This water intrusion causes intermittent electrical faults and system malfunctions 6. Practical takeaway for diagnosing seemingly-unrelated electrical gremlins: rule out water damage as the root cause before chasing individual component failures. The leak issue reportedly persists even after "recent fixes," and is treated by the community as an underlying design/manufacturing weak point rather than a one-off 6.

Specific case: VSM (body/vehicle control module) moisture causing gauge and light malfunctions. Symptom: lights and gauges malfunction — e.g. the dashboard indicator shows the rear lights should be on, but they don't actually light up 7. Likely cause: moisture infiltration into the VSM connector 8. The affected connector is located in the fuse block area 910. Diagnosis/fix: (1) locate the VSM connector; (2) clean it with contact cleaner or isopropyl alcohol; (3) prevent recurrence by packing a silicone-based grease (not aerosol spray) around the connector — SILICOT universal silicone grease with fluoroplast (ВМПАВТО brand, ~30g tube) was the specific product recommended 111213.

Alternative/parallel cause: blown parking-light fuse and bumper wire chafing. A similar-looking symptom (gauge/light electrical glitches) can instead trace to a blown fuse for the габариты (parking-light) circuit, or to wiring damage/chafing near the front bumper (corrosion or insulation breakdown at that point is a recurring failure spot on this car) 1415.

Specific case: comfort-module and immobilizer-block flooding (push-button/keyless-start cars). On cars with push-button start, a flickering "key/lock" icon on the dash means the immobilizer can't read the key — a possible sign of the same underlying moisture problem 16 1718. Water can reach the comfort control module (блок комфорта) and the immobilizer block through two distinct paths: (1) a poor seal around the right fender below the windshield; (2) a loose hood-release cable grommet (прокладка тросика открытия капота). One owner found the comfort-block flooded — it sits by the driver's left foot, just behind the cabin filter 19. Diagnosis: check for water under the driver's left foot area or under the passenger-side carpet 2021. Repair that resolved the issue: dry the affected blocks thoroughly, then coat exposed circuit-board areas/contacts with epoxy resin to seal them, and pack silicone grease into all connector pins to prevent recurrence 2212232413. As a preventive check, disassembling the plastic trim by the driver's left foot and inspecting/ reseating connectors there is also suggested 25. Multiple owners report this class of fault causes seemingly random electrical gremlins that are otherwise hard to diagnose 202627.

BCM water damage causing multi-symptom failures — reprogram when replacing. The Body Control Module (BCM) itself can fail from water intrusion, producing a cluster of seemingly unrelated electrical symptoms at once: the parking brake won't release, lights won't activate, and the instrument panel flickers or dies 2829. Critical when replacing the BCM: parameters must be cloned from the old module to the new one, or the vehicle won't function correctly — a straight swap without cloning leaves the car broken 3031. Official dealers often decline this reprogramming work; independent specialists in the Moscow region (e.g. Odintsovo) have been reported to do it 3233.

Car won't start, all dashboard lights flashing — BSM/GLONASS water ingress. Symptom: the car won't start, all dashboard lights flash continuously, and the key gets no response. Cause: water ingress to electrical modules. Check, in order: (1) the BSM (body control module), located under the left A-pillar/left footwell area; (2) the GLONASS module under the driver's seat — its connector can end up fully submerged. Fix: remove the affected module, dry it thoroughly, clean the connections with isopropyl alcohol, and check for corrosion/oxidation. Also inspect the roof drain tube (under the dash panel) for a disconnect or blockage that lets water pool, and dry any wet carpet areas. One owner resolved the fault simply by disconnecting the GLONASS connector 343536373839 404142434445.

Radio/climate control unit failure traced to water under the carpets. If the integrated radio/climate-control dashboard unit stops working, first check for water under the carpets, especially in the driver/passenger footwell, and inspect the connectors under the seats and the BSM (comfort block) at the lower-left pillar for oxidation/corrosion — water reaching the unit causes connector oxidation. A repair shop can open and inspect the unit's internals; if it's beyond repair, an aftermarket Tesla-style touchscreen unit (no physical buttons) is a reported replacement option — see the head-unit card for more on that swap 46474849.

A minimal, generic confirmation of the pattern. One brief, low-detail report reinforces the general "oxidized contacts → intermittent electrical malfunction" pattern documented throughout this card: an unspecified intermittent electrical issue turned out, on inspection, to be caused by oxidized contacts somewhere in the system; cleaning them resolved it and the system returned to normal 50. No specific location or symptom was given in this report, so treat it as corroborating evidence for the broader pattern rather than a new diagnostic lead — when troubleshooting an otherwise-unexplained intermittent fault on this car, contact oxidation (see the specific locations documented elsewhere in this card and the BSM/BCM card) is worth checking early.

Complete dashboard illumination with no start, traced to a corroded connector block under the driver seat. One owner's case: all dashboard lights illuminate as soon as the battery is connected, regardless of key position, but the engine will not start. Root cause, found only after two weeks of undiagnosed trouble and a professional electrical inspection: wires inside the connector block under the driver seat had corroded, causing a short circuit. During the repair, two additional high-risk corrosion points were discovered in the same harness — reinforcing that this connector block is a recurring weak point worth inspecting proactively, not just after a fault appears 5152.

Severe intermittent power loss traced to water in the electrical distribution box plus a defective throttle body. A related but more severe case: intermittent, severe power loss (check-engine light plus the car becoming unresponsive unless shut off and left for ~10 minutes). Diagnosis found water inside the electrical distribution box causing contact oxidation, compounded by a separately defective throttle body (дроссель). Repair: clean the oxidized contacts and replace the throttle body. The fix held for 4+ years afterward with no recurrence; the repair was initially covered under dealer warranty 535455 5657.

Tail lights staying on after shutdown — comfort-block water damage, same fix pattern as elsewhere in this card. Symptom: rear lights stay on when the car is parked and alarmed. Cause: water damage in the comfort block's connectors, located to the left of the driver's footwell inside the trim. Fix, following the same pattern documented throughout this card: (1) disconnect the battery for 30+ minutes to force an ECU reset; (2) inspect the connector under the driver seat for water/corrosion; (3) if wet, dry the components and apply a thin solder coating to the contact pins for protection; (4) for a permanent fix, find and seal the actual water-entry point — common culprits are the windshield seal, hood seal, sunroof drain, or heater core. The underlying circuit issue can present as either a short or something immobilizer-related, but if the car still starts normally, a connector fault (rather than a deeper electrical failure) is the more likely explanation 585960616263646566 676869707172.

Dashboard cutting out mid-drive plus automatic-transmission lock — same comfort-block (BSM/VSM) water-damage root cause. A more severe variant, same underlying module: the dashboard (gauges and climate) cuts out completely while driving — the radio keeps working — the automatic transmission locks up when stopped, and the fault sometimes clears itself after about a minute. Cause: water intrusion into the comfort block (BSM/VSM module, to the left of the driver's footwell), corroding the connector pins. Fix: (1) disconnect the battery for 10 minutes to reset; (2) remove and inspect the comfort-block connector for corrosion/water; (3) lubricate all pins, optionally with a thin solder coating; (4) locate and seal the actual leak source. If the fault persists after connector service, a factory diagnostic tool is needed to clear the stored fault codes 727374757677.

Intermittent (not total) starting/power problems from the same GLONASS/BSM water path — plus an alternative diagnosis. A milder, intermittent variant of the BSM/GLONASS water-ingress pattern documented above: instead of a total no-start, the symptoms are intermittent starting/power problems and odd dashboard behavior, again pointing to water accumulation under the driver's seat affecting the GLONASS module and the body control module (BSM) connections there 7879. Drying the connections out and removing modules that aren't strictly needed was suggested as a way to resolve it 80. No standing water was found in this particular case, but the area under the seat remained suspect 81. Alternative diagnosis, same symptom picture: a failing ignition-switch contact group can produce very similar intermittent starting/power symptoms without any water involved, so if drying/cleaning the seat-area connectors doesn't fix it, check the ignition switch's contact group next rather than assuming water is always the cause 8283.
