Windshield wiper auto/rain-sensing mode not functioning
Tags: #wiper · #rain-sensor
Symptom. On some X80 units, the automatic/rain-sensing windshield-wiper mode doesn't work correctly: manual wiper mode works fine, but the auto/rain-sense mode fails to trigger the wipers appropriately.12
Possible causes and diagnostic approach. Three candidate causes were raised: (1) a relay failure — though relays are considered unlikely to be the direct cause given the system architecture; (2) a BCM (Body Control Module) malfunction — the BCM controls all wiper modes centrally, not via a dedicated per-mode relay, so a BCM fault can plausibly take out just the auto mode while leaving manual mode intact; (3) a wiper stalk/column switch failure. Recommended diagnostic approach: visually inspect the BCM connectors for moisture/water damage first (a known failure vector for other BCM-controlled features on this car), then check voltage/signal at the BCM's inputs and outputs to the wiper motor to isolate whether the fault is upstream (BCM/wiring) or downstream (motor/stalk).12
