Wiper relay spontaneous activation
Tags: #wiper · #relay · #corrosion · #water-ingress · #bsm
Symptom: the wipers activate on their own even when the control stalk is in the OFF position, and the relay(s) stay engaged after the stalk is turned off 12. A temporary fix some owners use: physically strike the fuse block with a hand — this can jolt the stuck relay(s) back to a normal (open) state 34.
Root causes, most to least likely. (1) Water intrusion into the cabin fuse block, leaving visible green/blue oxidation on the contacts — check by pulling the connector blocks off and inspecting for green residue 567. (2) A short circuit elsewhere in the vehicle's electrical circuits — one owner found relays clicking even after removing the relay, suggesting current bypassing the relay entirely through a short 891011. (3) General relay/connector contamination unrelated to a leak.
Fuse/relay locations (pre-facelift/"doreste"). In the cabin, on the left side: the wiper relays and fuses are among the lower fuses/relays in that block, with front/rear wiper relays specifically noted as the two lower ones 12131415. Fuse rating: 5 or 10A, located under the steering wheel 1213.
BSM as a secondary suspect. Even once the fuse block is identified as the primary problem area, the BSM (body control module) block is also worth opening and inspecting, since it shares exposure to the same moisture ingress pathway 1617.
Permanent fix. Open the fuse block(s), inspect for green/blue corrosion on the contacts, clean them with electronic contact cleaner, and replace any relay whose contacts are too corroded to clean. The diagnosis worsens the longer the water sits — earlier intervention gives a better chance of a successful repair rather than needing a full block replacement 1817. One owner reported checking under the carpet regularly for water intrusion (from the driver's footwell area) as a possible entry point to also address, since he suspected water tracking in from there even without visible carpet wetness at the time of inspection 1920.
