Camshaft position sensor — P0340 and oil seal

Tags: #part-number · #oil-leak

Error code and effect. Error code P3046 / P0340 indicates camshaft position sensor failure. This disables variable valve timing (VVT) and causes a noticeable loss of power1.

Diagnosis. Check the sensor's wiring and connector for damage first — this is reported as the most common failure mode12. The camshaft position sensor is mounted on the cylinder head cover (valve cover)34; a Ford Mondeo 4 2.3L is cited as using a similar sensor placement for reference5.

Part number and replacement. Sensor part number 3602055-37K (FAW Besturn X80). It is described as inexpensive and a roughly 10-minute replacement67. If replacing the sensor doesn't resolve the issue, check the VVT solenoid for clogging or inspect for a stretched timing chain as the next steps8.

Oil seepage from the sensor seal. When the camshaft position sensor weeps oil from its seal, the seal itself can be replaced separately from the sensor; doing so may require removing the valve cover3910. One owner reports the seepage can remain a minor weep — not requiring urgent repair — for up to 2 years111213141516.
