The FAW X80 has two catalytic converters.12

Removal costs (Moscow, RU market, Dec 2024 report): - Service labor for removal: ~4,000 RUB.13 - Flame arrestor (пламегаситель) installation: ~2,500 RUB.1 - ECU reflash to Euro-2: 7,000–10,000 RUB, or ~5,000 RUB if bundled with the removal ("with connections").134 - Basic ECU adjustment down to Euro-2 emission mapping is free if included as part of the removal package; full stage tuning (performance remap) is a separate, additional paid option.4

Catalyst scrap value. Removed catalysts can be either (a) trade-credited toward the service cost, or (b) sold separately — but current market conditions (as of Oct–Dec 2024) mean scrap value is minimal: theoretically valued around 5,000 RUB (RU market, Oct-Dec 2024), but in practice many shops refuse to buy them or credit only a nominal/near-free amount due to low precious-metal content and demand.5678910

Mileage recommendation. Removal is typically recommended around 120,000–200,000 km, once the catalysts are naturally degrading anyway (community members note this is somewhat subjective, but real examples exist: one owner found a second catalyst already partially melted/damaged ("подплавлен") at 80,000 km).2111012

Verification. Shops verify the catalysts are actually removed (not just bypassed cosmetically) using a spectrometer to check for precious-metal content, relevant when trading in the old units.9

Fuel octane after removing the catalytic converter. After removal one owner runs 92 petrol and says it gives the best consumption and pull. Another found 95 and 95+ used more fuel with no real gain, while a third says 95 pulled better before the converter was removed131415.
