Cylinder honing/boring — when needed

Not a periodic maintenance item — only two legitimate triggers. Cylinder boring/honing is not something to schedule as routine maintenance on the X80. It's only needed when one of two conditions applies: (1) the engine has over 200,000-300,000 km and significant bore wear has actually occurred, or (2) a power modification is desired, requiring new oversized pistons. Without one of these two triggers, honing is unnecessary and — per this source — can actually cause damage rather than prevent it1234567.

Don't bore without also replacing pistons — and check the liner-thickness limit first. Do not bore the cylinders to increase piston size without simultaneously replacing the pistons with matching oversized units and fully understanding the engine modifications this requires — boring alone, without an oversized piston set, is not a valid procedure. A specific caution for this engine: the X80 has thin cylinder liners, which limits how much material can safely be removed during boring — the safe overbore capacity on this engine is more limited than on engines with thicker liners, so this isn't a job to improvise1234567.
