Engine "loses sync" and stalls — diagnosis
Tags: #catalytic-converter · #diagnostic
Symptom. After roughly 15 minutes of warm-up, the engine begins to stutter and can stall, described in the community as the engine "losing synchronization"12.
Three primary causes, each with its own check. 1. Timing chain has skipped a tooth. Check the alignment marks on the valve cover/camshaft sprockets against the factory timing marks; a skipped tooth throws off valve timing enough to cause the stutter/stall pattern2. 2. Clogged catalytic converter. Remove the upper (front) lambda/oxygen sensor and attempt to start the engine with it removed; if the stall/stutter disappears or clearly improves, exhaust backpressure from a clogged catalyst is the cause2. 3. Crankshaft position sensor failure. Scan with an ELM327-type OBD2 adapter for a missing or intermittent RPM/crank signal; a failing crankshaft sensor can cause the engine to lose sync with its own crank position, producing the same stutter/stall symptom2.
Each of the three causes has a distinct, low-cost first check (visual timing-mark inspection, sensor-removal start test, OBD2 scan), so the recommended approach is to run through them in that order before assuming a bigger repair (e.g. full timing-chain replacement) is needed2.
