Fuel tank capacity and octane spec
Prices and suppliers on this page are Russian-market (RUB, at the dates shown). Verify locally before relying on them in Syria.
Tank capacity and official spec. The FAW Besturn X80 fuel tank capacity is 58 liters per the official owner's manual12. After the pump clicks off on first fill, roughly 5-7 more liters can still be added, giving ~63-65L total usable capacity including reserve1. The manual's fuel specification references standard number "17930" (i.e. GB 17930), unleaded petrol12. Operating temperature range shown on the manual chart: -15°C to +45°C3. One owner pushed back on a rumored 71L figure circulating elsewhere, noting that per the manual it's 58L and 71L "definitely won't fit"4; a third-party spec listing (drom.ru) was also cited in support of the tank-capacity figure5.
Octane requirement. The manual states a minimum octane rating of 92 (unleaded, per GB 17930)26. Some owners run 92 successfully; 95 is more common in the Russian market6. The spec is also printed on the inside of the fuel-filler flap, per one owner's reminder to another7.
Community octane debate. Owners report mixed experience across octane grades: - 92 octane: the traditional baseline — most economical, matches manual minimum89. - 95 octane: preferred by some owners for smoother running1011. - 98 octane: considered unnecessary on a stock engine; several owners report the engine "тупит" (bogs down/pings) on 98, i.e. detonation-adjacent symptoms rather than a benefit1213. - Fuel brand/quality (e.g. Pulsar, Jeddrive were named as acceptable brands) appears to influence smoothness and performance at least as much as octane rating alone1415. - Vehicles that have had the catalytic converter removed/deleted ("евро2" ECU modification) show increased detonation risk on 92 octane and are reported to need a minimum of 95 octane; symptom without enough octane is described as "клапана звенят" (valve/knock rattle)161718.
Additional individual reports. One owner tried "good" 95+ and 98 and found the car ran objectively worse/duller than on 92, describing it as the engine having "heartburn" from the extra additives19. Another switched from habitual 95 down to 92 and noticed no real difference, remarking their wallet was happier for it20. On the catalyst-delete/detonation question, one owner argued the "клапана звенят" rattle may actually be carbon buildup/compression-related rather than purely catalyst-related, comparing it to VAZ ("Tazy") engines that rattle after a head skim + metal gasket but don't last long that way21. A different owner with a catalyst-delete car described concretely: on a half-tank of 92 after the delete the car would barely run; topping up with 98 helped, and a full tank of 95 ran fine, but going back to 92 afterward the car "won't take it" anymore2223. One owner with high fuel consumption (11.6 L/100km, self-described as driving mostly in the city) said she wanted to try 92 to see if it would lower consumption, to which another owner replied some in the group claimed as low as ~7 L/100km2425. A remap/ECU flash done without triggering fault codes was noted as unusual/impressive by another member of the discussion26.
Consumption test comparing 92 vs 95. Suggested test procedure from the community: reset the trip odometer, fill 30-40L of the fuel to be tested, drive exclusively in D mode, and record the resulting consumption27. Results reported: the difference between 92 and 95 octane ranged from no measurable difference up to about 1 L/100km worse on 92, depending on driving style and conditions — the engine is designed to run on either grade2728.
Fuel gauge calibration quirks — additional reports (drop lag, and consumption-based estimate not level-based). Separately, owners report the factory fuel gauge can show 'full' when the tank still has 20L+ capacity remaining (attributed to Chinese gauge-calibration design); after driving begins, the gauge display drops 1.3-1.5x slower than actual fuel consumption. The low-fuel warning light triggers at roughly 10-15L remaining, varying with driving mode/consumption rate29303132. A related, more detailed report states the gauge doesn't purely reflect tank level — it calculates remaining fuel based on consumption rate, which produces a common symptom: the gauge reads 'half' or 'low' yet only ~35L actually fits at fill-up, despite the 58L rated capacity. Workaround: reset the trip meter at every full fill-up and cross-check actual fuel added every ~500km. In one case, the low-fuel warning appeared at 470km into a tank but only 35L went in at the pump. Loose fuel-sender contacts are suspected in some cases, causing gauge errors that persist even after a battery disconnect3334353637383940.
Octane and driving-feel — additional individual reports. One owner reported 92 octane gave poor acceleration and a rough feel, and switching to 95 noticeably improved engine response. A separate owner who tested extensively — 7+ grade/brand combinations daily over roughly two years — found 92 octane optimal for both consumption and efficiency in their own use. Results are reported to vary by individual perception and by fuel quality/brand rather than octane number alone41424344.
92 vs. 95 octane — no strong performance difference, quality matters more. No significant performance difference is felt between 92 and 95 octane fuel on the X80. Reports: 92 octane works reliably even past 102,000 km; 95 octane is preferred by some for more dynamic driving; a few owners updated firmware and then switched to 95. Community view: fuel quality matters more than octane rating (avoid unreliable/sketchy gas stations); the price difference between grades is marginal. General recommendation: 92 for economical driving, 95 for spirited driving45464748495051. Conflict: one user reports no difference between 92/95, another prefers 95 specifically after a firmware update — the variation likely reflects driving style and fuel-quality variability rather than a fixed rule.
Octane recommendation restated concisely. Minimum: 92 octane regular fuel. Recommended: 95 octane for enhanced performance — a brief restatement consistent with the manual-minimum-vs-community-preference split already detailed on this card52.
Fuel pump prices in Russia, late April 2026. 95-octane gasoline ranged 64-71 RUB/liter: Gazpromnieft (a Gazprom subsidiary, separate company from the Gazprom-branded pumps) at 64.80 RUB/liter, Rosneft at roughly 70.50 RUB/liter. Regional variation noted, with the Moscow area running ~69-71 RUB/liter (RU market, April 2026) and other regions somewhat lower5354555657.
Fuel tank filler neck — anti-siphon screen. The fuel tank includes a fine mesh screen in the filler neck (горловина) that prevents siphoning fuel out via a hose — attempts to siphon yield no fuel flow, and the hose stays dry even when fully inserted to the fuel level. This anti-theft design cannot be bypassed without removing the fuel pump assembly5859606162.
Filler-cap marking — "not below 92," and a report that higher octane runs worse. The X80's fuel filler cap itself is marked "не ниже 92" ("not lower than 92") — a physical, on-car restatement of the 92-octane minimum already documented on this card. One report goes further than the "no strong difference" consensus above: use of 95+ octane is specifically not recommended, with owners reporting the engine runs better on 92 — more consistent performance and better fuel economy than on higher grades. Conflict: this stands in tension with the earlier reports on this card of owners preferring 95 for "more dynamic driving" — not resolved within this data batch, and may depend on individual engine condition, ECU calibration, or simply differing subjective impressions6364.
Octane preference on a catalytic-converter-deleted engine — 92 preferred, 95 causes detonation. On one X80 with the catalytic converter removed (deleted at 190,000 km — see the cat-delete card), 92 octane is preferred; 95 octane causes detonation, with audible pinging under throttle. This is a distinct, engine-modification-specific data point rather than a general contradiction of the 92-vs-95 discussion elsewhere on this card. The same owner reports Lukoil fuel specifically reduces consumption by 0.2-0.7 L/100km versus other stations, and that fuel quality varies noticeably by brand/region: Gazprom is described as consistently good, while BR, Rosneft, and regional brands vary. Reported city economy: 8.2-8.3 L/100km on standard fuel, dropping to 7.5 L/100km on Lukoil premium (as of a September 2024 report)6566676869.
During fuel-supply shortages, 100-octane shows better economy and response than 92 or 95. The X80 can run on 92, 95, or 100 octane fuel. During a period of fuel-supply shortages, owners reported that 100 octane gave better fuel economy (lower consumption across multiple reported ratios) and slightly better engine response compared to 92 or 95. No performance degradation was noted on 92 octane in normal, non-shortage driving. The practical takeaway from this report: choice among the three grades depends mainly on local availability and regional pricing rather than any strict engine requirement above the 92-octane minimum already documented on this card — confidence: medium7071727374.
Where the community disagrees
- Community disagreement: traditionalists favor 92 octane for economy; some owners claim 95/98 is beneficial; owners with catalyst-delete ECU remaps report 92 causes problems and require 95 minimum. Fuel brand/quality appears to matter as much as octane rating itself.
- Octane preference reports conflict: one owner sees no difference between 92 and 95, another specifically prefers 95 after a firmware update. Not resolved within this data batch — likely depends on driving style and fuel-quality variability.
- A further conflict layer on octane choice: the filler-cap marking and one report insist 92 is correct and 95 runs worse, while other reports on this card (including [^conflict1], involving catalyst-delete cars) claim the opposite — that catalyst-delete/remapped cars specifically need 95 minimum, and that 95 causes detonation on at least one other catalyst-delete car documented on this card. These reports are mutually inconsistent even accounting for the ECU-remap variable, and are not resolved within this data batch — engine-specific tuning, catalyst-delete status, and individual ECU calibration likely all play a role and should be verified per-vehicle rather than assumed from community consensus alone.
