Noise at 3000 RPM — air-filter-box resonance

Symptom. A bass-like, turbine-sounding resonance appears when pressing the accelerator, roughly around 3000 RPM; releasing the throttle slightly and reapplying it makes the noise fade. Reported on a 2019 X80. The noise is present in Park/Neutral if revved to that RPM range, ruling out a purely drivetrain-in-motion cause^12345678.

Leading suspect — air filter box (короб воздушного фильтра) resonance. Several owners point to the air-filter housing as the most likely source: one reports their own filter box made this exact sound around 3k RPM, silent at idle but occasionally droning under load (e.g. climbing a grade); switching to a Mann-brand filter previously made the sound disappear, but at the time of this report the owner was back on the original (orig) filter, which seemed better-made overall despite still rattling somewhat^{9101112131415}. Separately, and consistent with the same failure family, another owner found their air-filter housing had been installed by a shop with only one of its two retaining clips fastened, leaving it loose enough to potentially draw in unfiltered air — worth checking after any service visit, and plausibly a contributor to intake-resonance noise if the housing isn't seated/clamped correctly¹⁶¹⁷. Other candidate causes raised in the same thread. (1) A rattling/leaking exhaust flex joint (гофра) — suggested as an alternative source, worth inspecting¹⁹. (2) A damaged/disintegrating catalytic converter — one member described an near-identical case: the noise appeared the day after buying the car, a shop visit found the catalyst had broken apart internally²⁰. (3) General wear-point checklist offered by one member for this type of noise on Mazda-derived platforms: a poorly-seated air filter box, the belt tensioner roller, the alternator pulley, air leaks in the exhaust system's joints, and low АКПП fluid level — any of these can produce a droning/humming symptom²¹.

Diagnostic approach. Testing in Park/Neutral by revving to the affected RPM range helps localize the noise to the engine/intake/exhaust side versus the drivetrain: if the noise is present with the car stationary and revved, it points toward intake or exhaust; if absent stationary but present while driving, it points toward the drivetrain⁷⁸.

Air filter OEM cross-reference — Mazda part number. The air filter's original part number, RF4F13Z409A, is a genuine Mazda specification (likely Mazda 6 GG/GH); it can be sourced from Mazda dealers as an alternative to generic FAW X80 suppliers²².

Air-filter resonator rattle — anti-rattle screw fix. The plastic insert inside the air-filter resonator chamber can rattle because the factory retention clip tabs are too small and fail to properly grip the thin, loose insert. Fix: use a 12mm self-tapping screw to clamp the insert tightly to the housing. Result reported: noise drops from a loud roar to a quiet hum during acceleration²³²⁴²⁵.

Air intake resonator — purpose and typical failure mode. The air intake resonator (the plastic tank/chamber positioned under the intake) is designed to reduce intake noise and keep water from reaching the filter. Its thin-walled, flexible plastic construction is an inherent weak point: it typically fails by splitting at weld seams, especially in summer traffic/heat. Fix: secure the partition to the housing with a self-tapping screw (drilling a small hole through to the frame/housing as needed). Alternative: remove the partition entirely if the vehicle will never be driven through deep water — the partition's only real function is to block splash-back during water fording^{43444546474849}.

Crackling/ratcheting noise on acceleration from a stop — another loose air-box baffle case. Consistent with the internal-partition rattle already documented on this card: one owner reported a crackling/ratcheting sound (compared to a bike chain) specifically when accelerating from a stop, returning to normal once cruising. The sound originates from inside the engine compartment. Suspected cause: a loose plastic baffle/deflector at the bottom of the air-intake box resonating/vibrating against the housing during the acceleration transient. Fix, consistent with the partition-securing approach already on this card: access the bottom of the air-filter housing from under the engine compartment, locate the small deflector piece (identified by feel in the tight space), and either remove it or secure it with zip ties to stop the vibration. This is a noise-isolation fix only — no function is lost either way⁵⁰⁵¹.
