Oil pressure sensor leak — symptoms and location

Symptom. After a long drive, one owner noticed the engine had lost a noticeable amount of oil, with visible oil pooling around the A/C drain-tube area on the underside of the engine¹. The leak location was low on the engine, sprayed outward onto the steering rack and driveshafts — not a valve-cover gasket leak, and unrelated to the automatic transmission (the AT's own seal was clean and its fluid level normal)²³.

Cause and typical loss. Another owner reports having had the identical problem: the oil pressure sensor had deteriorated/split, the oil-pressure warning lamp started flickering, and about 300g of oil was lost through the failed sensor⁴.

Location. The oil pressure sensor sits low on the engine block, near the oil drain line; oil from a failing sensor can spray onto and accumulate around the valve cover and nearby components. It's reported possible to spot/access the sensor without a lift, though care is needed given its low position¹³.

Internal seal failure — flickering lamp mimics an electrical fault, but it's mechanical. Restating and clarifying the failure mechanism already on this card: the oil pressure sensor can leak oil from inside the sensor body itself, causing the warning lamp to flicker intermittently — a symptom that looks like a loose electrical connection but is actually a seal-integrity failure within the sensor, not an electrical/wiring issue. The lamp flickers while the engine is running. Fix: replace the sensor with a new one; there's no electrical fault to chase⁵⁶.
