Putting the automatic transmission in neutral
Tags: #automatic-transmission
General procedure — releasing to neutral for service. To place an X80 (automatic transmission) in neutral for service work: shift to Neutral (N), press the handbrake (parking brake) button down, then turn off the ignition while continuing to hold the handbrake — this sequence keeps the transmission out of Park without the parking brake re-engaging unexpectedly during the service.
Different procedure for rear brake pad service specifically. A distinct sequence is used when the neutral/handbrake release is specifically for rear brake pad replacement (see the dedicated rear-brake-pad-replacement card for the fuller electric-parking-brake procedure, including the pre-restyle vs. restyle model difference documented there): turn on the ignition, set the selector to Neutral, press the handbrake button, then turn off the ignition. This order differs from the general-service sequence above — using the wrong order for the specific task at hand risks the parking brake re-engaging mid-service.
Confirm Park before restarting. Regardless of which release procedure was used, always ensure the selector is back in Park (P) before attempting to start the engine again.123
