Spark plugs — installation, torque and tools

Part of the spark-plug series — overview: Spark plugs — options, prices, reliability.

Spark plug torque spec — do not exceed 18 kgf. Installation torque for the X80 spark plugs should not exceed 18 kgf (~18 N·m / 13 lb-ft). Over-tightening risks breaking the ceramic/electrode assembly, especially on plugs already installed in a used vehicle12.

Spark plug and ignition coil socket sizes. Spark plug socket size: 16mm. Ignition coil connector socket size: 8mm3.

Thread size mix-up — ordered M12, needed M14. One owner attempted to install new plugs but discovered they had ordered the wrong thread size (M12 instead of the correct M14) and had to reorder; separately, the same owner noted that Startvolt-brand plugs already installed showed yellow staining on the insulator after only ~1,500 km4.

Factory plugs extremely tight to remove at 120k km/5 years. One owner (Niko75) reported that after 5 years and 120,000 km on the factory-installed plugs, they were extremely tight and difficult to extract from the cylinder head — barely removable, suggesting a very high factory torque56.
