Throttle body adaptation after battery disconnect
Tags: #throttle-body · #battery · #ecu
When it's needed. After disconnecting and reconnecting the car battery (e.g. for other electrical work), the throttle body/ECU may need to re-adapt/re-learn its baseline before the car runs smoothly again.12
Shortened adaptation procedure (community-reported, not the full factory procedure). Rather than performing a full dealer-level throttle adaptation, one owner reported success with a shortened version: (1) reconnect the battery negative terminal; (2) turn the ignition on and wait approximately 60 seconds; (3) turn the ignition off; (4) leave the car completely unpowered/at rest for about 5 minutes. During this rest period, the ECU reportedly self-calibrates without needing the full formal adaptation sequence.12
Caution during the rest period. Do not leave the key in the ignition during the 5-minute rest — the procedure depends on the car being fully unpowered/undisturbed during that window.12
Result reported. Following this procedure, the car started well; the reporting owner had not yet done a longer test drive to confirm full smoothness under load, so treat this as a promising but not exhaustively validated shortcut (confidence: medium).12
