Timing chain — service schedule debate
Prices and suppliers on this page are Russian-market (RUB, at the dates shown). Verify locally before relying on them in Syria.
No timing belt — it's a chain. The FAW X80 does not have a timing belt; what some call "ГРМ" here is the timing chain, along with its gears, tensioners, etc. There is a separate accessory/serpentine belt on the engine, but that's unrelated to the timing chain and is serviced based on visible wear, not a fixed interval12.
Manufacturer service schedule vs. dealer upsell. According to the maintenance schedule, the timing chain is nominally due for inspection/replacement at 50,000 km and 100,000 km3456. One dealer reportedly told an owner at ~85,000 km that the chain needed replacing at 90,000 km, quoting about 30,000 RUB (RU market, October 2024)7. Community pushback: at 90,000 km it's still "a bit early" for the chain to actually need replacement — it should start rattling audibly if genuinely worn, which is uncommon this early — and the dealer's push is seen as following the written schedule mechanically to upsell a service, rather than a response to an actual symptom16. General repair cost estimate if genuinely needed: roughly 40,000-50,000 RUB (RU market, October 2024), depending on where the work is done1.
"Don't fix what isn't broken" counterpoint. Owners recommend not replacing the timing chain preemptively — only when it audibly starts to rattle. One long-time member (Oleg) reports his own X80 has reached 240,000 km with no chain noise and no chain service ever performed48. Advice given to the asking owner: if within budget, replacing proactively with a genuine/original part isn't wrong, but if there's no rattle, it can reasonably wait62.
Timing sprocket cross-manufacturer compatibility. The X80's Duratec HE engine uses timing components compatible with Ford and Mazda equivalents. Reported compatible part numbers: Ford 2029145 and Mazda LF94-12-4X0A, both 38-tooth sprockets. Tooth count should be verified when sourcing a replacement, since timing-chain pitch may differ between otherwise similar-looking sprockets; source from Ford or Mazda OEM catalogs9101112.
Replacement kit part number and price. OEM FAW timing-chain replacement kit 1026040-37KIT13 is available from Autopiter as an 11-piece complete kit (chain, tensioners, and guides), priced around 5,000 RUB (RU market, July 2025). The chain should be replaced as a complete assembly, not on its own — a Mazda-specific kit such as Masuma MGR-4001 is not suitable for the X80141516.
Two timing chains — intake and exhaust, replacement scope if one slips. The engine actually has two timing chains (intake and exhaust), not one. A diesel-like knocking sound can indicate a chain problem. If a chain slips, the repair scope is large: both chains, the tensioner, multiple sprockets/stars, and the water pump typically all need replacement together — this is not a simple job and needs proper diagnosis first. Cross-check parts against Mazda 6 GG specs, since the engine is derived from that platform1718192021.
GRM timing chain kit — pricing and alternatives. The original FAW X80 GRM timing chain kit costs roughly 14,500 RUB (RU market, Oct 2025). Mazda alternatives cost around 13,900-14,380 RUB (RU market, October 2025), also available via Chinese auto-parts sites (kitzapchasti, ~14,380 RUB). Community consensus: prefer the original kit if the price difference is small (under ~500 RUB, RU market, October 2025)22232425262728.
Chain durability estimate — restated with tensioner-limit context. The timing chain is expected to last from 200,000 km to effectively indefinitely. Unlike belts, chains stretch over time, which is why a tensioner is required. Around 200,000 km the tensioner's adjustment range should be monitored, but the chain itself should still be functional at that point — replacement becomes necessary only once the tensioner reaches its mechanical limit293031.
Dual timing chains restated — replaced as a set, not at the standard 60,000 km service. Restating the dual-chain design already on this card: the 2.0L engine uses two timing chains with their own sprockets and tensioners, not a belt. All of these components (chains, sprockets, tensioners) are replaced together as a set, never individually. At the standard 60,000 km service interval, these are not typically changed — replacement only becomes relevant at a much higher mileage threshold, consistent with the "don't fix what isn't broken" guidance and the 200,000+ km durability estimate already documented on this card323334.
Chain durability — real-world experience up to 330,000 km, no failure reports. Additional reinforcement of the durability estimate already made on this card: the timing chain is rated for roughly 100,000-200,000 km of nominal service life. At 100,000 km, replacement is typically not needed. Around 200,000 km, the chain enters a "risk zone" for stretch/wear. Real-world durability in practice extends beyond 300,000 km — one owner reported the chain still functioning normally at 330,000 km (observed/tested over 61,000 of those km). As of May 2026, there were no community reports of timing-chain failure3536373839.
Earlier, independent mileage anecdotes — 223,000 km with no issues, wear starting past 200,000 km. An earlier, independent set of reports adds concrete mileage anecdotes consistent with the durability picture already documented on this card: one owner reported 223,000 km on the original timing chain with no rattling or wear issues. Another owner, at 86,000 km, was considering early replacement (out of caution rather than a symptom). A third owner, past 200,000 km, noted timing-chain wear beginning to appear. Overall, chain life on this engine appears to extend well beyond 200,000 km when properly maintained, consistent with the durability estimates elsewhere on this card40414243.
Timing chain (not a belt) confirmed for the 2018 restyled model — from the second Telegram group. A separate community (FAW BESTURN X80 group) confirms the "no timing belt — it's a chain" fact already established on this card, specifically for a 2018-model, restyled (facelift) X80: asked whether the restyled 2018 X80 has a belt or a chain — a question the owner notes gets conflicting answers online — a group member replies simply "chain!"4445.
Dealer work order for a timing chain (ГРМ) replacement (order dated 13 June 2026; posted Oct 2026). The photographed order, "replacement of the timing chain kit", shows labour at 30,870 RUB in total (RU market, dealer, June 2026), with an oil and filter change. Materials on the same order: four intake-manifold gaskets at about 400 RUB each, a valve cover gasket at about 1,000 RUB, a timing chain kit at about 39,200 RUB (listed price; column alignment is hard to read and the figure may be before discount), and four units of Lukoil Genesis Special Advanced 5W-40 at about 1,500 RUB each (all RU market, dealer, June 2026) 46. A commenter adds that the valve cover gasket can also be changed during this job 47.
Repair cost estimate and a high-mileage report. An owner estimated a chain repair at about 60,000 RUB (RU market, September 2024) and no longer trusts service shops to do it correctly1348. Another owner has about 230,000 km, no chain rattle, and says he will deal with problems as they arise rather than change the chain pre-emptively4950.
