Valve cover gasket leak — oil drip

Prices and suppliers on this page are Russian-market (RUB, at the dates shown). Verify locally before relying on them in Syria.
Symptom. One owner found moisture/condensation around the valve cover in the spark-plug-coil area and, on removing the coils, discovered spark-plug wells 1, 2, and 3 were full of oil, while well 4 was dry1.
Diagnosis and fix. The cause is a failed valve cover gasket. The fix is to replace the entire gasket kit, which includes new O-rings for the spark-plug wells2. Compatible/equivalent gasket kits: Elring 001563, Mazda LF210230, and others3. The gasket seats on a conical (tapered) fitting — there's no alternative fitting style to worry about45.
Related symptom — oil pooling on the exhaust manifold. In a separate report, an owner found oil collecting on the upper exhaust manifold specifically when accelerating, while the valve cover area directly above stayed dry to the touch. Initial suspicion was a cracked cylinder head, but other members pointed to the same root cause as above: oil from the valve cover (rocker cover) gasket dripping down onto the manifold rather than a head crack. This was described as consistent with valve-cover-gasket seepage rather than a new/different failure mode; direct inspection is needed to confirm the exact leak path in any specific case67.
Cross-brand confirmation — Mazda/Ford Duratec HE heritage. Separately reconfirmed: the FAW X80 engine (Duratec HE family, shared with Ford/Mazda) accepts both Mazda- and Ford-branded valve cover gaskets, consistent with the cross-compatible gasket kits (Elring, Mazda LF210230) already noted above and confirming the shared OEM heritage8.
Oil in cylinder-4 well plus misfire at 1200-1300 RPM — gasket + well-seal replacement. A separate case: oil accumulation specifically in the cylinder 4 spark-plug well, combined with cylinder-4 misfires at 1200-1300 RPM that stop after an engine restart, points to a valve-cover-gasket leak (consistent with the wells-1-2-3 case already on this card, but here affecting well 4). Recommended fix: replace both the valve cover gasket and the individual well seals (прокладки колодцев) together — replacing only the gasket without the well seals risks leaving the misfire symptom unresolved91011.
Engine smell on inclines — possible valve-cover-gasket or oil-leak cause. Symptom: an engine smell that appears specifically when climbing hills, worsens at traffic lights, and disappears after 1-2 km of driving. Oil level checks show normal readings. Possible causes discussed: a valve cover gasket leak (consistent with the leak mechanism already documented on this card) or a more general oil leak elsewhere in the bay. Diagnosis requires physically checking gasket condition rather than relying on oil-level checks alone121314.
Oil in spark-plug wells confirms gasket failure — repair-manual detail (Ford Focus gasket, sealant, torque sequence). Restating and detailing the diagnosis already on this card: when spark-plug wells contain oil, the valve cover gasket requires replacement. Use gasket material per the official Ford Focus specification (a DURATEC-compatible ROSTECO part is available), apply sealant per the service-manual pattern, and torque to spec (roughly 4-6mm sealant bead thickness per the manual's diagrams). Allow the sealant to fully cure before running the engine1516171819.
Leaking breather connection — Rosteco gasket recommended as a reliable fix. When the valve cover gets soaked specifically at the breather-tube connection, the fix is to replace the gasket with a Rosteco brand part (OEM designation "КК Ростеко," red type). One owner's original stock gasket was leaking cartridge/blow-by gases at that connection; after switching to the Rosteco gasket, it held reliably for several years when properly installed. Caution against attempting workarounds at the breather connection without replacing the gasket itself — excessive crankcase-gas pressure at that joint is the root cause, not a symptom to patch around202122232425262728.
Fitment variability — matching part number doesn't guarantee a proper seal. Separately, valve cover (red) gaskets are reported to have fitment problems even when the part number matches and the gasket appears correct: gaskets can be oversized around the perimeter and shift/move within the mounting grooves. If installed incorrectly, the cover can "weep" oil despite being nominally the right part. Recommendation: source from a reputable/official distributor rather than an unverified aftermarket listing, and apply sealant if fitment looks marginal; some owners switched to black gaskets (vs. the red type) for a better fit. Conflict: fitment varies between manufacturers even when the listed spec matches — this is a supply-quality issue, not a spec error2930.
OEM part number and quality-variance note. A separate, earlier report gives the valve cover gasket's OEM part number directly: 1003052A37K. Multiple suppliers carry it, but quality is reported to vary roughly 50/50 between good and poor examples — consistent with the fitment-variability issue already documented on this card. Black gaskets are again reported to perform better than red versions (matching the black-vs-red preference already noted above). Alternative sourcing approach: search by the Duratec HE engine-family designation rather than the FAW part number alone, to surface more cross-compatible listings. The gasket must be replaced whenever the valve cover is removed for a clearance adjustment (see the valve-lifter/shim-adjustment card)313233.
Ford Focus 2 (2005-2010) 1.8-2.0 16V DURATEC gasket — earlier, independent confirmation. An earlier, independent report reconfirms the Ford-cross-compatibility already documented on this card, with a specific donor model: a Ford Focus 2 (2005-2010) 1.8-2.0 16V DURATEC valve cover gasket fits directly. Brand ROSTECO (the same brand already recommended elsewhere on this card for the breather-connection fix) is available via a Wildberries listing3435.
OEM gasket part number LF0210230 (silicone) — broad cross-compat list, price, and fitment confirmation. A separate, later report gives the OEM valve cover gasket part number as LF0210230 (silicone) — likely the same underlying part as the Mazda LF210230 number already documented on this card, with a formatting/OCR difference in the leading digits (not resolved as identical vs. distinct here). Reported cross-compatibility is broader than previously listed: Ford Focus 2, S-Max, C-Max, Mondeo 3/4, Escape, Galaxy, and Mazda 6, 3, CX-7, CX-5. Price: roughly 1,500 RUB (RU market, July 2026) on Russian marketplaces (Ozon), also orderable through regular auto-parts shops. One owner confirmed fitment and performance after 1,500 km: described as thick, a tight fit, and operating normally with no leaks3637383940.
