Valve cover gasket leak — warped cover cause

Community members disagree on this topic — both positions are reported.

Part number: valve cover gasket 1003052A37K.1

Common failure pattern. The gasket leaks when the valve cover itself is warped — multiple attempts to seal the leak with high-temperature sealant will fail if this root cause isn't addressed, because a warped cover can't seat evenly on a flat gasket no matter how much sealant is applied. One owner tried 2 different gaskets ("Гастрономы разные" — different gasket brands) and both leaked ("сопливят"), including trying an aggressive amount of high-temperature sealant on the most recent one, with no success.213

Diagnosis procedure: visually inspect the valve cover for cracks and distortion; verify the cover's edge is perfectly straight by checking it against a straightedge. In this case, the inspection was done visually and the surface "looked fine" without obvious cracks, so the owner proceeded with reassembly rather than replacing the cover — but the community's advice remains to physically check with a straightedge, not just eyeball it, before reinstalling.45

Fix: replace the gasket only after confirming the cover geometry is correct (flat, no warping). If the cover is warped, a replacement cover is required — a new gasket alone will not fix a warped-cover leak.216345

Red vs. black KitZap gasket fitment conflict, and Mazda-original recommendation (2024-07 report, corroborates the warped-cover finding above). A separate community thread specifically about gasket fitment (as opposed to the warped-cover root cause documented above): a red gasket ordered from KitZap matched the listed part number but was oversized/loose relative to the actual groove template ("больше по размеру, гуляет" — larger, doesn't seat snugly), causing a poor seal independent of cover condition. Black gaskets fit better than the red KitZap variant. Community recommendation: prefer OEM Mazda original gaskets or the black KitZap variant over the red one. One owner separately reported that even a black gasket sourced from a Chinese supplier failed (developed a leak) within 3 months, so gasket-brand quality varies even within the "prefer black" recommendation — inspect fit carefully regardless of color before final installation, and check the cover for warping (per the diagnosis procedure above) if a properly-fitted gasket still leaks.789
