Subwoofer installation — wiring and signal sourcing

The stock FAW X80 head unit has no dedicated RCA subwoofer output ("no RCA/tulip jacks visible" on the factory unit) ¹²³. Community-recommended approaches:

• Active subwoofer (built-in amplifier): will play from any head unit, including the factory one — "the amp doesn't care what radio is in the car" ⁴⁵. If there's no dedicated sub-out on the head unit, take the signal straight from the door speaker wires ⁶⁷.
• Signal without a dedicated sub-out: any audio channel — RCA/"tulip" or speaker-level wire — can feed a subwoofer if routed through a high-to-low frequency crossover/converter first ⁷. • Passive subwoofer: needs a separate amplifier and box design — treated by the community as "more of a pro/enthusiast setup," not recommended for a casual install ⁹¹⁰.

Community view: if you've never run a subwoofer before, try an active unit first — if it's not for you, an active sub is easy to resell; if you like it, you can upgrade later ¹¹.

Line-level converter: last resort (contrasting view). The advice above allows taking the signal from speaker wires through a converter ⁶⁷. One member counters that a speaker-to-line converter should be the last resort: the signal should come from the head unit's rear output or a USB feed. A converter means disconnecting one speaker or door channel, and equaliser cuts then affect every channel, which makes tuning hard ¹².
