Instrument panel rattle — drainage channel

Tags: #rattle · #dashboard · #diagnostic

Symptom: a vibrating/rattling sound coming from behind the instrument panel (щиток приборов), most noticeable over small bumps — enough vibration to trigger it — and also audible at idle while stationary. Removing the instrument panel itself found only a single air duct behind it, with nothing visually obvious that could be rattling ¹.

Possible unrelated cause raised, then dismissed as off-topic: one suggestion was that an aftermarket (non-OEM) car alarm installation could have disturbed or left something unsecured in that area — offered as a general troubleshooting angle rather than a confirmed diagnosis for this specific case ².

Likely cause — the windshield drainage channel/pocket behind the dashboard: the more targeted lead came from an owner who had previously disassembled the plastic trim behind the windshield and found a large pocket/channel there for draining water — this cavity is large enough that loose debris or the panel itself moving inside it can produce a rattle that transmits into the dashboard area, described as potentially maddening ("может тебе оттуда все мозги вынести"). Fix approach: locate and inspect this drainage channel behind the windshield trim, check that debris hasn't collected inside it, and ensure the trim/channel itself is properly seated and not loose ³.

Outcome: the owner reported he would try this lead, but no follow-up confirmation of a successful fix was recorded in this thread — treat the drainage-channel diagnosis as a strong, community-recommended starting point rather than a confirmed fix ⁴.
