Interior trim removal — tools and technique

Tags: #tools

Cheap plastic trim-removal tool sets (~200 RUB, RU market, September 2024) from Wildberries or Ozon work well for interior panel removal; plastic doesn't scratch trim the way metal tools do ¹². These tools wear out quickly — several owners buy 10+ at a time and treat them as consumables rather than trying to make a few last ³⁴. Tool design matters: a bent-lever shape allows proper clip engagement without damaging components, so cheaper sets with a good lever profile can outperform pricier straight ones ⁵⁶⁷. For the specific procedure of removing the dashboard panel around the factory radio, see the head-unit installation card.

A-pillar trim panel removal: the A-pillar/dashboard trim panels attach via plastic clips only — they are not bolted down. Removal: pull gently and steadily from the bottom/passenger side toward yourself; a clip-release tool (plastic pry set, available on Ozon) makes this easier if the panel resists. An easier entry point for initial leverage is via the wheel-well opening. Avoid aggressive/sudden prying, which risks breaking the clips ^891011121314. Caution: specialized rigid metal-hook clip-removal tools sold for this purpose can be risky if you're not sure what type of clip is underneath — one owner warned that using such a tool on door trim (where the clip arrangement differs) can go badly if you don't already know the clips are the type that tool is meant for ¹⁵¹⁶.

Ceiling clip removal: ceiling clips (потолочные грибки) are simple mushroom-style plugs that insert into anchors set in the headliner. To remove: simply pull straight out; the anchor (дюбель) itself remains in place in the headliner ¹⁷¹⁸.

Gray trim panel removal — bolted (not just clipped) example: a gray interior trim panel (door area) is removed by unscrewing 2 bolts located on the bottom of the panel, then pulling toward you — a straightforward procedure once the bolt access points are located. Note: unlike the A-pillar and ceiling clips above (clip-only, no bolts), this particular gray trim panel does use bolts in addition to clips, so check both fastener types when working with unfamiliar trim panels ¹⁹²⁰.
