DIY sunglasses holder from a FixPrice glasses case

Tags: #diy

A DIY overhead sunglasses/eyeglass holder can be made from a FixPrice glasses case (~300 RUB, RU market, August 2026), motivated by wanting a fixed spot instead of keeping glasses loose in various compartments. The case itself is metal with a leather exterior and velvet interior lining, which gives it enough rigidity to double as a mount ¹²³⁴.

Mounting method: drill two holes through the roof headliner's plastic frame and secure the case with M5 bolts, washers, and nuts. The plastic roof frame is awkward to work in, so it helps to weld the nut to the washer beforehand to make one-handed installation from inside the cabin easier. Washers were hand-made, roughly 1.5 × 1.5 cm, sized to fit the mounting points ⁵⁶⁷⁸.

Orientation note: the case has no top or bottom — its design is symmetric — so it can be mounted either way without worrying about correct orientation ⁷.

Why this option: buying a proper aftermarket eyeglass holder ("за косарь", i.e. for roughly 1,000 RUB) and waiting an unknown delivery time wasn't appealing; grabbing the FixPrice case at 300 RUB (RU market, August 2026) was a faster, cheaper alternative that repurposes an off-the-shelf product ⁶.
