AISIN guidance. AISIN, which supplies automatic transmissions (automatic transmission, AKPP / АКПП) to more than 40 carmakers, recommends changing the ATF (automatic transmission fluid) every 2 years or 20,000 km. Its reference chart notes that carmakers often suggest 60,000-80,000 km or a lifetime fill, and AISIN considers those intervals too long for the conditions it assumes. A drain-and-fill replaces only about 2 litres, because the rest stays in the torque converter and the pan; AISIN's equipment instead pumps the old fluid out hydraulically and replaces it with new fluid.1 The chart does not list the X80 fluid, so check the owner's manual or the dealer; see the ATF specification reference and the JWS3309 vs Dexron card.1

Warning signs in the fluid. New ATF is red and darkens after about 20,000 km of normal use. The chart lists three contamination signs: metal debris (abrasion, the transmission needs repair), high temperature (wet-clutch slip), and a milky, paste-like look (water has entered the transmission, repair needed).1

Owners disagree on intervals. One commenter quotes Aisin's 20,000 km or 2 years for hot climates and ZF's 80,000-100,000 km.2 The owner (Oleg Belousov) argues the gearbox has a fixed designed wear life and more frequent changes will not extend it; KASPER counters that changes every 20-40k km let gearboxes last far beyond 250k km (citing a 700k km example) and calls a partial change every 40k km a sensible middle ground.34 The official X80 manual only asks for a level check every 30,000 km; compare the dealer 60k/120k advice on the transmission fluid intervals card.

Partial change in steps (owner practice). The owner drains about 3-4 litres through the drain plug and refills through the fill port, repeating this about every 40,000 km rather than doing a full drain; the gearbox holds about 4.5 litres. When he opened the pan at 200,000 km the filter mesh and magnet were in good shape with only fine deposits, so he replaced the filter and gasket. He says a partial change at each service is the usual approach for higher-mileage cars.567

Cost of pan gasket and filter. The owner puts the gearbox pan gasket and filter together at about 1,000-2,200 RUB (RU market, Sep 2024), a loose figure, and suggests buying them together with the fluid.8 For the filter itself see the AKPP filter card; the long fluid thread is on the AKPP ATF card.
